I have an '02 Sequoia with ~80k miles.
Recently, we occasionally noticed a burned oil smell when we stopped at a light or in the driveway.

Last night I smelled it and saw smoke comming from one of the rear wheels after some hard braking.
I took the wheel off and noticed oil pretty much everywhere, but it didn't appear to be coming from the caliper or brake lines.

I'm a decent shade-tree mechanic, but I've never replaced axle seals and we are scheduled to drive to Utah next weekend.

Any tips on doing this myself or would I be better off taking it somewhere?
How much would a repair like this cost?

This is a chronic issue on Toyota Tundra and Sequoia vehicles.

There is a TSB, DL00203 check it out.

There is something about defective seals for the passenger side rear axle seal. There is/was a TSB. And there is also an issue with the axle breather.

Many posts, but I would start here and read away. Good luck.

Thanks for the links

How can I tell which seal is leaking. There is one inside that the axle fits through and one outer seal with the bearing assembly

The inner oil seal seems easy enough, but the other one is a beetch and requires a machine shop, new bearings, retainers, etc.
