My wife's 2004 4 banger Accord just turned 100K miles this past weekend and she went to get the oil changed as she gets it changed every ~3,000 miles.

The guys today told her she should get the "engine flushed" as engines can start to develop sludge in the 80K-100K mileage range.

I've never heard of an "engine flush" as I've heard of a coolant flush and injector and fuel line cleaning. I don't see any reason to "flush" the oil as the oil has been changed every 3,000 miles. Hell, if there's anything stuck in there I want it to stay there.

Anyone ever heard of an engine flush? I'm afraid they just tried to take advantage of her.

If it's a coolant flush, should it be done at 100K and almost 6 years old? I'm guessing that might not hurt but never done it myself in any of my vehicles. I always figured if the coolant system has fluid fresh stuff isn't going to make it last longer but I could be wrong there.

Thanks guys.

Engine flush is bs, don't worry about it if you changed the oil every 3k.

However, look into the owner's manual to see when the coolant needs to be changed.

With the car's age and mileage I think it's about time.

The only flush thats really needed is the Coolant.

IIRC Honda uses long life coolant. 100K is about time. When was the timing belt changed?

Our mechanic (who I trust) told us that her car actually has a timing chain and we don't need to worry about it. If you know any different, please let me know.

I checked the serpentine belt and it looked in good shape but I should probably go ahead and replace it just to be safe.

Thanks for the info.

Thats right, honda switched to a chain on some of their cars (THANK GOD!)

If you keep the car to 200K, you may consider putting one in.

Engine flushes are the oil change places latest scam to make more money.
