Took it to Autozone because the check engine light popped on during my drive home from work today and got code P1163 which appears to be bad O2 sensor #1. It looks like there are two O2 sensors- one before and one after the cat and I assume #1 is the one before the cat. Autozone wants $370+ for this sensor/wiring/connectors which is ABSOLUTELY F'ING RIDICULOUS. Where do you suggest I purchase the sensor?

Also of note:
1) I took the car to the local Honda dealership on Thursday for the 75,000 service and they said everything was in great shape. Odd.

2) This morning I put a small bottle of Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner in the tank before my drive to work. Coincidence? Dude at Autozone said the Lucas may have caused some crap to be blown onto the O2 sensor. Uhhh okay.

Any other thoughts/advice?

actually, scenario #2 sounds very possible.

Okay, would you think I could remove the sensor and 'clean' the 'crap' off of it? If so, how should I go about that? Fortunately the sensor is in a very good location so removal and putting it back on will be really easy.

With or without scenario #2 being possible the dealer had absolutely no way to know your o2 sensor was about to go out. Your car didnt know and it is monitored by a computer. People are so quick to blame dealers and/or other shops when they have nothing to do with a problem most of the time. In regards to getting it fixed I'd check the price of the o2 sensor at the dealer and by it there if it is at all comparable. Electrical components can be pricey and are definitely sensitive. Your other options are to try and clean it (I have no idea if this would work at all but couldn't really hurt it) or to just ignore it bc o2 sensors aren't extremely important anyhow. If you are planning on driving this vehicle for a few more years I'd advise fixing it. Also check with the dealer as some mid to late model years had an extended emissions warranty (14 yrs/150k) if I remember correctly. I think that ended in 97 though so dont get your hopes up.

jamodi83, was I blaming the dealer?

I did check their price this morning- $525!!!!!!

I will take it off to try to clean it but help me out Ags: How do I acquire the primary O2 sensor for a reasonable price?

Oh yeah, negative on the extended warranty.

No. 7, you'd have to get one (risking having the same thing happen, or it being bad from the jump) from a used parts place like a junk yard.

New, O2 sensors are ridiculously expensive.

When I do my catless headers after my cam, I'll be tuning out that type of code.

Since you just ran the cleaner thru it, I would give it a while and see if it clears up on it's own.

Just at a glance the non Honda O2 sensors are substantially cheaper. You probably should consider buying online.

Wow, those are some expensive O2 upstream sensors. You can get a Standard Motor Products brand from Rockauto.com for $332.79. Or $340 for a Bosch. Anyway, search for a code online and you can easily get 5% off. That puts it at $323 plus ~$7 shipping (no tax) for the Bosch.

Email me at wchain at aol dot com.

Have you tried to just reset the computer to see if it goes away?

I just had the same problem on my 99 accord... I took it to the local mechanic, they reset the computer and it's good to go.

I have been driving it for about a week now and the check engine light has yet to come on.

I would highly recommend resetting the computer before you do anything else.

I'll reset as soon as I get home. All I have to do is disconnect the battery for a few mintues and that's it right?

1agswitchin4lanes- you have mail.

BVA- I may have missed it but I didn't see exactly what I need. It's a 98 btw.

Those are o2 sensors for 98 Civic. I thought the prices looked lower than you said, but I dont know exactly what you need.

Here is one for less than $100.

But you need to double check the Model/Engine as I was not sure which model you had (EX, LX, CX) etc.

He has the HX, which is the higher perfomrance model. Everything for the HX is much more expensive for some reason...

HX is actually a lean burn high fuel efficiency model.

The ones at autohaus dont have the right plug head. Manual transmission Civic HXs have an 8 pin connector that uses 5 pins.

Yes, 1agswitchin4lanes is correct (well over 40 MPG) and it is a 5 wire.

I reset the computer at lunch yesterday and the CEL hasn't come back on.
