Thought this should be shared here.
This article is from Empower Texas, which goal is a voucher system so don't expect them to highlight anything good coming from public schools. As far as Waco ISD, the district's student population is 85% economically disadvantaged. There aren't many ecodis schools, I'd say less than 5%, problem closer to 1%, that are meeting the state's standard for STAAR testing. I'm not making excuses, but it's a major factor, and one very difficult to overcome. Impoverished families don't have the means to focus thier time and efforts on education, because they're too busy trying to make ends meet. Second, the said population's culture doesn't usually understand the impact education has on breaking the cycle.
The solution far exceeds what's going on behind the walls of the classroom. Communication and buy in from the community is a must for real change to occur. Dr. Nelson is busting his chops to create a unified community in schools. He was successful in doing so at Laredo ISD, so there is a good chance he and his staff will get things turned around. It's not gonna happen overnight. It's gonna take time, meaning a few years before you see the effects.
