Given my frustration and overall sadness with the loss in Los Angeles last night, felt it was time to think about something else for a day.

I am seeking comments from the Central Texas Ags about the New High School in Belton. Since this seems to be a big topic in the Temple paper and since I did not grow up here nor have as much invested in the traditions associated with Belton High School, I wanted to see what were some of the old timers and new comers thoughts on the school mascot and colors. Since that seems to be the main area of debate.

Now I realize that debates over mascot/school names/colors are pretty contentious so keep it clean Ags.

So give your idea for the mascot/School name/colors in that order.

Mine:

Mascot: Mountain Lions or Deer herd (since there are so many in Morgan's Point)
Name: Lake Belton High School
Colors: Brown and Gold

The smellagram has banned me from commenting or liking on their Facebook page. I have no idea what the PR arm of BISD is saying. But I did go to both of the community meetings held at the admin. The board president seems to think it needs its own identity but most others like the community feeling of BISD. Direction/Geographic names are very boring and over used as it is. Remember we already have Lake Belton Middle school on that side of the district. And schools on that side of the district are Tigers too, so will they take on the mascot of the new HS? Or do we become like TISD and KISD and every school have it's own mascot and colors? There's red everywhere, even bathroom stalls. So this can get expensive.
What about when we build a 5th middle school that splits students into each high school? Because the district is probably trying to buy land from barge along 317 just south of the Leon.
And omg we'll need a third hs soon, because ya know Georgetown is growing slower than us and they have 2!
It seems it's not as easy as picking a name, colors and mascot. Sheet rolls downhill and this will affect more than just one new HS.

My suggestions -
Mascot - Bengals
Colors - Either White and Red or Silver and Red
Name - Belton High School at East Temple

Mascot - Cowboys, Steers, Bulls
Colors - ?
Name - Chisholm Trail

The Deer Herd was a good suggestion, altho I thought of Bucks right away. A very good friend of mine taught for years at a school with the mascot Bucks.

None of these are PC. They will play girls' sports too! That was one of the things a guy from the architect firm brought up. Gotta be careful these days with mascots being PC.
And we have an elementary named Chisholm Trail already.
I like Belton Memorial HS warriors, but I'm not sure warriors is PC. Colors red & charcoal.

My bad, I'm not a native, nor a fan, just a 10 year citizen who won't be much longer. No reason to stay in the area. Already planned to move, just riding the storm out.

Imma native and I'm outta here in 4 yrs. even if it's just a move to a neighboring ISD. Can't afford the taxes and don't agree with how the money is being spent.

Well Belton ISD has already, and predictably, dug it's pit of silliness and provincialism by making all middle schools red and white, with the same mascot

It's dumb

So either the new school will be alone with new colors and a new mascot

Or the middle schools will change

I expect these locals to do something stupid like make the new school red and white

Me personally?

I like the color combination of Navy and Gold, and would like to see the mascot be the Cougars or Black Bears, because they are native to Texas, live in the wild in Texas, and are beautiful animals

Cougar is my favorite, despite the dumb connotation it somehow got with older women looking for ****

My vote: Cougars, Navy (or Royal) blue maize

Ronald Reagan High School

Hafta admit, Belton Reagan has a ring to it. Much better than Belton Bush or Belton Obama

GW Bush Belton High makes more sense being closer to Crawford than Belton. J/k but it is way the heck out of the way.

According to an arricle in this weekend's TDT they are going to make a decision on the new school's mascot in October. Looks like they're seriously considering Tigers for the new school as well. I have to say I'm dissapppointed they aren't considering Bengals. To me if you want to stay with the Tiger theme you do something like that so it's basically the same thing without being exactly the same. You could just flip the color scheme.

Other possibilities they've narrowed down to are Bobcats and Patriots.....i guess Bobcats makes sense since the school will be in Temple city limits.....thus the Belton version of Wildcats....

And to hell with folks like you. Ya move here to escape the carnage and traffic from wherever, yet ya wanna know where all the restaurants and shopping and individual school mascots are...ya want it to be like the place you left, except now you're gonna pay 2x the tax rate for 2x less quality of home and schools and way of life. BISD ain't all that.

What's "changing"?

The school doesn't even exist yet!!!

Just kidding. Lord we need your property tax dollars and ANY kids you have in the ISD. That's at least $8300 per kid from the state we damn sure can't lose. I have former hs classmates that have transferred their top ranking minority kids out of BISD. That's gotta hurt. I have other hs classmates that believed the crap BISD shoveled at them only to realize the decision was the worst for their child but best for BISD and their special needs dollars. I've known folks whose child was suspended for multiple days because he told a classmate his food from the school cafeteria looked like cat food (the other kid was Asian). I could go on and on... I kinda don't want the new hs associated with it any more than the super and board members do. West temple feels it doesn't belong anywhere. So name it west temple hs cats and be done.

It will exist in 2018 when tax statements go out.
