The Westphaila picnic is Oct. 13th. Heard a litte about it (just the noodles how they are a must have) but never been. Sounds like it is on my cen tex bucket list.

Also The St. Joseph's picnic in Cyclone is the last Sunday in September. Anyone have any info on this or how to pick up tickets for out-of-towners for both events?

Neither sells advance tickets. They will both have plenty on hand yhe day of.

Good times have been had at both through the years.

Yeah, these are walk-up deals

We've gone to Westphalia the last few years. Good food. Games, auction... I think they may have a dance, but we don't stick around for that..

Haven't been to the St. Joes picnic in 5-6 years, but last time we went it was fine..

Neither is a rockin' good party time or anything like that. Well I guess it can be if you just wanna just get hammered on a sunday afternoon in Westphalia.

But thats not really the atmosphere for either one. Just something nice to do with the family...

May want to check that date on the St. Joe picnic. I think it's the 4th Sunday in September, rather than the last Sunday....

I believe the Cyclone picnic is on September 22, 2013. At least that is the day we are driving up for it.
Captain Pablo

I believe you are correct on that...

4th Sunday....

Thanks for clarifying. Any good eats at the St. Joe's picnic that might not be at the Westphalia one?

Fried chicken?

I believe both have fried chicken and sausage. Difference is Cyclone has "dressing" while Westphalia has its famous "Westphalia Noodles."

Both are delicious and worth the price

The Westphalia picnic is always the 2nd Sunday in October, come rain or shine. You can get a plate and stay and eat at the hall or you can get a plate to go. Plates include fried chicken, Westphalia sausage, green beans, Westphalia noodles, coleslaw, onions, pickles, bread, desert and tea. I believe plates are still $8 and they are well worth it (along with the still ridiculously cold and cheap beer). I'm a senior Ag Leadership major at A&M and I'm from Westphalia. I work at the picnic every year since I was about 6. If you come to the picnic, look for me. I'll be wearing an A&M hat and shirt and I'll be near the food line helping out. Hope to see a lot of y'all there! Thanks and Gig 'em!

Looking forward to it...

I will say y'all will have to hustle to outdo St Joe's cole slaw.

I don't really even like coleslaw all that much but St. Joe's is REALLY good...

They don't have the noodles, though...

Both picnics have outstanding fare...

Due to it being a little wet and being really hungry, we got our plates to-go in the drive thru lane (very smart on their part) and ate them at home.

The green beans and the fried chicken (woww!) were out of this world. Sausage wasn't bad and I guess I had high hopes for the noodles...they were still good, I was just expecting them to be creamier. Dessert was great, too.

Next year we will go and walk around and eat there, but my wife and brother hadn't been either and they liked it and want to go back. Want to try the St. Joe's one in Cyclone next year also.

When is yours in West, Bohunk?

The Westphalia noodles are egg pasta, butter, and cracker crumbs. That's pretty much it.. The extent to which they are hyped pretty much makes it impossible to live up to their billing...

These picnics are $8 plate lunches and something to do on a Sunday. It's not Disney World, a Caribbean cruise, or dinner at a 5-Star Restaurant.

The food is good, and a lot of hard work goes into making it for several hundred people...but when it gets down to it, it's fried chicken sausage, and sides. It's not gourmet, but it's not supposed to be... It's about an annual gathering of friends, community people, and raising funds for rural churches... And in the process getting a decent lunch at a decent price...

And if you're lucky, you might win a 2 litre Dr. Pepper or Big Red..

And then it's over and you do it all again in a year...

That's pretty much it...

The recipe for the Westphalia Noodles is as follows: First you take saltine crackers and grind them up, then brown them in a skillet until they're golden brown in color. Then you boil Ronco brand yellow egg noodles and strain them. Add the browned crackers crumbs to the top of the noodles and there you go - Westphalia noodles!

The total numbers for this year were 5,680 plates served and $44,000 made off of the auction. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Yeah, but there's a couple of additional details:

You brown the crumbs in one stick of butter per 1 cup of crumbs

Also, boil those noodles in chicken broth instead of water (not sure if they do this at the picnic, but some of those ladies will tell you to use chicken broth)

When the noodles are drained, add a stick of butter and stir it in. 1/2 stick if you're on a diet. Heh.

Also, they sell kits at the picnic

Heard tonight that they served over 5800 plays yesterday and the auction brought in just over $42,000.

Sad I missed it this year
