There is a pretty good Mexican restaurant in the area called Tres Maguyes (sp). LOTS of fast food places, but everything is close by in Temple.
I'm leaving in three hours for Chicago for the weekend with our Brainstorm team (they are going to Nationals), or I would come by and check out your softball game.
Thanks. We basically want to go to a non-fast food joint that is easily accessible for kids. A Roadhouse/Cracker Barrel type might work best (although BJ's is tempting).
No more Doyle Phillips (RIP). If you had a really good time machine you could hit Taco Villa (long before taco cabana or taco bueno, used to get book covers from them when I was in elementary school) or head over to east adams to Charcoal Drive In. No thats a time machine.
Wow, what a blast from the past! RIP Bluebonnet Cafe and Smitty's, one absolute legend and one near legend. LOVED those places, especially Bluebonnet!!
Smitty's curly fries rocked the house (literally since it was in an old house). Also miss Giovanni's pizza and G-Willies, both same building where Bum's is now. Thinking back there used to be a restaurnt next door in an old train caboose, thinks was called Twin Caboose or Red Caboose. Hey, I was only 2 back in 76 so my memory is a little hazy.
I remember Padingtons. First time I ever saw a big screen tv. Ah, and Journey the video game in the back... ahh yes, those were the days. How about McDonalds (original on 31st) back when they had the blue seats and all the indian sketch artwork hanging around.
This might be the best thread I've seen on the Central Texas forum. What a great blast from the past.
For a short amount of time (not sure how long the place lasted), if you were a kid, you HAD to have your b-day party at WC Franks. That was a fun, fun place for kids. Someone remind me exactly where that was located.
Hunan's garlic fried chicken was the best fried chicken I've ever had. No lie. I can still taste it in my mind even though it's been 20 years at least.
'97 Wasn't WC Frank's over by Montgomery Ward's and Weiners? I think it was.
The mention of the western artwork at the 31st street McDonalds reminds me of the old What-A-Burger in the mall.....had sadles for some of the seats.....when I was about 4 that was the coolest thing I ever saw!

I think of those seats at Whataburger everytime we go to Clems. He has some saddles on stands for kids to sit on. My 3 yr old loves them just as much as I did at whataburger; which incidentally the old whataburger on Ave M across from Clems (now Rylander's) and DaVinci's (which is still in business) used to sponser my soccer team back in the day.
Okay, I just realized this is a Blast from the Past thread now!
Two things...my kids LOVED the saddle seats at Whataburger AND the merry go round! When they were little kids two of them were seriously ill on several occasions that meant multiple trips to S&W. Good cooperation meant a trip to the merry go round.
There was, in the mid 80s, a 50s themed diner/restaurant on the loop just past the mall. That place had THE BEST milkshakes!
Also, there were better stores in the Temple Mall back then!
