How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have only been in Temple since Sept. and I already have a good feel for some of the businesses here. From day one my wife said that she didn't feel comfortable in some of the restaurants. I told her she must feel that way because it was a different town than College Station and for the most part that's what it was. No people are as nice as in B/CS.
Just last week, she went into Jack and Jill's for pastries and noticed that it was taking way too long for the guy to take her order. She saw the guy look at her then pick up a newspaper and start reading it. She waited another moment then, when he still didn't get up to take her order, she left out of anger and disbelief.
Well, yesterday I went there to get my son and I some kolaches. They were busy at the drive-thru but not inside. So, I went in. Order taken and paid, then I wait for the woman to give me my goods. I wait...............and wait some more. She looks at me and asks if I need anything else, I say "yes, my order."
She responds, "I gave you your order." Okay, no big deal. Just an honest mistake.
But she insists that she gave me my order. And continues to do so when her husband comes over to see what was going on. She explains to him(in an Asian dialect) the situation. He looks at me and says, "check your pocket!" in an accusing and demanding voice.
I am stunned. Speechless.
I wait for them to figure out their mistake and just look at my son, sad that he had to witness his father being accused of lying or stealing.
The customer at the drive-thru window brings to the attention of the two(owners) that she was given the wrong order- mine. They humbly apologize to her and just slide my order to me across the counter without saying a word.

WHAT IN THE WORLD JUST HAPPENED TO ME?!?!?!?

Sad. Just sad.
I am officially boycotting Jack and Jill's Donuts.

1. Asians don't like hispanics? Nah. Don't think it's that.
2. Maybe they're newcomers to the states and don't know how business / social justice / equality works here. They have to learn how the 'melting pot' works.
3. Could be a simple mix up with no apology because they're very prideful people and don't want to admit a mistake.

You should have done one of two things my mom or pop would have done:

1. Snatched the order of donuts, left, and never come back.

2. Snatched the order of donuts, then threw the bag right back at them, THEN left.

Don't worry about it though... coincidently my pop told me of a donut store we passed by one day that was going out of business. It was ran by some orientals too. He told me they weren't very friendly.
These people will not last long with the bs their pulling.
Businesses in the black section know better than to pull this kind of bs though. These occurrences are rare.

This is happening in the hotel business too. All these rude easterners buying these hotels and running them into the ground. Same with alot of other businesses they own apparently. Hospitality is something they just dont understand or practice very well.

I have been hearing a very nasty rumor running around as to why they do this- the get low or no interest loans to own a business. They get what they can from customers while deliberatly running the business into the ground so they can use it as a tax write-off. That way, they don't have to repay the original loan they took out for the business. Then they go on to their next business and do the same thing.

I do not know if this is true or not, but if alot of the rundown indian-owned hotels are any indication, I say the rumor might just be true I have yet to find an american-owned and managed hotel that is anywhere near as rundown as the indian-owned hotels.

My apologies to any easterners reading this. Maybe I do not understand why this is happening. Please feel free to enlighten me.

I have met the Warren family who started the Jack and Jill Donut stores and they were afraid this very thing would happen!

Old man Warren sold all his outlying/out of town stores but since their flour company was still going to supply them, agreed to allow the name to remain unchanged, same logo. NOT THE SAME SERVICE!

The Valley Mills Drive store was the first I remember having the Asian influence and come to think about it...may have closed...we went there twice and were treated rudely and never went back. Don't know about the New Road location and 18th Street has been gone a long time.

I know exactly what you are saying about the hotel situation. Oldest daughter and I went through 3 rooms at an Extended Stay trying to find one that didn't smell...one was rodents, one was ho house odors and one's AC didn't work. They finally put us in "the new renovate" room and it was nice, clean and smelled like new carpet and paint.....and when my daughter plugged in her curling iron while the microwave oven was on and then turned on her hair dryer....the breaker switch went!!! Patel ring a bell?!!!

In respect for Mom, I'll go easy on my criticism of Jack N Jill donuts, taste and store-wise.

Maybe they USED to be good; they, in my opinion, haven't been nearly as good as Shipley's in a very long time.

I promise you, MexAgs, you'll really like Shipley's better, anyway.

They were crap the past 15 years! Shipley is great the morning they are cooked and eaten and really great if they are hot but they don't have a chance the next day.

Krispy Kreme are the only ones I have seen that were just as good two days or more later, as they are fresh. That said they are too sweet and give me and son migraines.....so we steer clear of them all together.

This whole story makes me sad to hear. I haven't been to J&J since my family lived IN Temple (that was... ohhh... about 22 years ago now) and they used to be so good then. But I know I noticed over the years the decline in business. I had no idea it had gotten so bad.

The original on New Road is still around.

When I lived in Lubbock, there were about 5 Jack & Jills, most had closed before I moved back to Waco.

The ones in Temple have been around about as long as I remember--and that is a while.

The one on New Road in Waco was there when I moved here in '73. I used to love going there, then I ate many at the new closed location in Crossroads West.

To hell with donut stores, go to Green's Sausage House and get some real breakfast! Their kolaches kick a$$!

Kolaches- those are like pigs in a blanket right?
God how I miss them.

Why do people love Shipley's so much? After about an hour, they taste terrible. Try Daylight Donuts across the street from Target (Waco). The guy is really nice, and the donuts are a cross between J&J and Shipleys'.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I dunno...maybe we all have different tastes on what's good?

And, this guy lives in Temple, not Waco.

No they most certainly are not.

Anyway, kolaches = the fruit kind, klobasniki = "sausage rolls." Pigs in a blanket = the crappy hot dog weiners wrapped in bread they serve at Shipley's and other places down here in Houston and call kolaches.

Wow that shows how long I have been away.

There was this awesome place between College Station and Brenham that Alvin (our bus driver) would occasionall stop at to get doughnuts. They had these wonderful pigs in a blanket type thing that I thought wer called kolaches. It started with a K and was a very funny word to pronounce anyway. I never knew where this place was or even what it was called because I was sleeping on the bus to Blinn. I would only wake uo when he announced he was stopping for breakfast. he would let us all run in and get something and get back on the bus to the Brenham Campus. This had to have been in Fall 1984 or Spring 1985 because thats the only year I went to Blinn. Transferred to SHSU later.

Jack & Jill used to be absolutely awesome. Best glazed donut I've ever had.

And yes, Greens has the best sausage kolaches in the entire world. Fantastic is an understatement. Awesome black-pepper based sausage(not cut in half or into quarters!!!)and not too sweet bread...Makes anything from West taste pedestrian and uninspired.

Bring it. But go to Green's first to be enlightened.

If by "anything in West," you mean Czech Stop, then you may have a point....that's where most visitors get their kolaches in West....unfortunately it's also the worst place to get them.
TennAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I was half-joking, and yes the czech stop is an atrocious tourist trap monster. (although still acceptable to me in a pinch.)

I pimp Greens really because of their superior sausage. That and the area east of Temple has a huge Czech history and Greens is a reflection of that.

Yeah, but your kin in West snatch up all the fresh sausage kolaches first thing in the morning and there isn't anything left but Czech Stop!!!!!

Tell those boys to stay at work on their coffee breaks too!

The Kolache Kitchen has better kolaches than Greens, but Greens has better sausage kolaches.

I don't waste time with fruit, poppyseed or cheese kolaches, etc. That's girl food.

Actually....that's real Bohemian food. Poppyseed kolaches are the bomb.

Green's is the best.

TennAg is correct; that area of Bell County is as rich in Czech history as West is.

I will admit to only having Czech Stop in West, and ....well, Green's is miles better.
