Has the seaweed hit yet?

I'm taking the our yearly Port A excursion for a fun, old fashion, family vacation. (with tons of fishing thrown in for good measure)

Just checking in for a beach report.

Yes it has, and it's thick as ever. I haven't been up to Port A in a couple weeks, but the Corps of Engineers had "banned" cleaning up of the seaweed on N. Padre Island for some reason. Rumor has it that it's something to do with the Ridley Sea Turtles, but I think that's just an excuse and it's really incompetence by the Parks Department.

To follow up on your original question, yes, and on N. Padre Island the beaches are covered with seaweed and along the waterline it's been between 2-4 feet thick.

I'm heading out to Port A this weekend, so I'll have an update then.

The Seaweed is here in mass. You can walk on top of it and not sink into it. I know most people complain about it, but I personally don't mind it. This is also the time of year for sea turtles. This is what mother nature intended, and what also help to build the island itself.

I think, if they are going to "clean up the seaweed", they need to till it into the sand instead of scooping it up w/ a front-end loader, along with 3-4 inches of sand, and dumping it along the dune line.

The picture was taken last week at BHP, not Port A. For your sake, I hope it's better in Port A. The seaweed mess hasn't arrived in Galveston yet.

I was in Port A from Monday through Wednesday. The seaweed was horrible. We stayed at Port Royal, so at least we had the pool.

I was in Port A this past weekend for Father's Day and the seaweed is slowly but surely starting to dissipate. Give it a couple more weeks. Unfortunately, it's always like this at the beginning of the summer. If you head down toward Horace-Caldwell Pier, the beaches are fairly clear of seaweed, but the water is pretty nasty.

IF you head down toward the Nueces County line, where you can drive onto the beach, the seaweed is heavier, but the water is clearer.

So -- depends on if you want clean beach or clean water. Guess it's too much to ask for both along Texas beaches this time of year.

Anyone been to NPI between Bob Hall Pier and Fish Pass in the last few days? I'm heading down there this weekend and would like to know the conditions of those beaches.

Also, where is a good place to get a surf report?

Beaches on NPI look nice now. They've cleaned up the majority of the seaweed and it's looking pretty good. Surf has been barely longboardable for the past several days.

Fish Pass is not part of NPI, it's part of Mustang Island(same island as Port A). They are starting to clean the Port A beaches. There are a bunch of restrictions on beach cleanup. Can't put the seaweed in certain areas, can't use certain machinary(sp?), can only scoop up seaweed without scooping up sand, etc. The Texas GLO and Army Corp of Engineers, can grant expemtion permits, but it tanks forever.

Surf report shows flat for the weekend....that sux.

It'll be a killer beach day, just no surf. Bring a bigger ice chest and umbrella.

Any new pictures of the beach? We (family traveling circus) were down on Memorial Day and plan on going back in mid-August. The beach was terrible, but we still had alot of fun. How is the fishing? We went bay fishing with a guide and we not very successful.

The beach is alot nicer (not that much seaweed) than it was a month ago.

You must have had a crap guide because of Memorial Day weekend my buddies killed the reds and trout in the Laguna Madre. Fishing is still good...get a better guide.

What is the weather like there in September. We plan on going down for a long weekend in mid september.

September is awesome in Port A. Still hot but not scorching. Water is still warm. Seaweed is usually gone. Just have to worry about Hurricanes. Not that one has hit here in years. (jinx)

I'll be there next weekend and the weekend after that and then back again for Labor Day weekend.. THANK GOD! I haven't been since Father's Day and that's just too long.

Had friends there this past weekend though, and they said the water was pretty and the beaches were great. I can't wait to get down there next weekend.

Just got back.

Beach was WONDERFUL this weekend. No seaweed. Hell, there weren't even any waves. The water was calm and clear. It was like being at the lake. Absolutely fabulous.

I wanted to post some pics of the beach on Port A this summer.

Seems that the city of Port A cleans the beach of seaweed, puts it in piles, then loads the piles and takes them away. It takes a few days to do this.

Anyway, while we were there, we saw a nice waterspout right behind the house in June.

We were staying right off of Beach Access 1-A, right across from the airport and Island Moorings.
