My wife and I have finally come to the sad conclusion that we have to find another home for our Chocolate Lab. We have had her for five years, almost to the week.
She is spayed, and we have the papers (AKC), always has been and is current on all shots, heartworm, etc. Has always been on Science Diet for food. She is potty trained but can be kept in or outdoors. Her weight is 90 lbs, however has NO fat, just pure muscle. She loves people and playing ball. She gets a little worked up going new places, and knows when it's time to G-O somewhere. Her parents were hunters (we were told) and it shows even though she has never been trained specifically to hunt. She can sense gophers as much as 8 inches under ground, and can catch them too. Moles offer no challenge to her.
That is one reason we are having to find another loving home for her. We have tried every method except the "water in the hole" method to get her to stop. If there are gophers and moles present she will dig them up. We have tried to get rid of the buggers ourselves but have failed. Also, she does not dislike little kids at all, but does not distinguish them from adults and plays just the same, and at her size, we do not feel totally comfortable that he will not get hurt.
We have contacted Houston and Austin Lab Rescues but they say they will not take dogs from individuals at this time (and don't know when). The local Humane Society (a no kill facility) says they are not taking animals now either (or for the near future). We have advertised her in the paper (without saying free because we want someone interested in her, not just pit bull practice), and have put up posters for 2-1/2 weeks but not one call. This decision for my wife and I has been the toughest one of our marraige, and we have been saddened by it but are commited to it.
If someone would be truly interested in adopting Dixie Dew please post your email and I will send pictures of her. I do not know how to post pictures or I would. We live in Victoria, Tx.
