Mid-March is when the crowds hit. N. Padre Island in CC is filled with the local people, i.e. High School kids, punks, basic trash, and it sucks. The majority of the college crowd will go to Port Aransas, which is better and "less gangsta". If you come to the coast during March, go to Port Aransas. Plus, since you have kids, the city of Port A has "pedestrian-friendly" parts of the beach, meaning that you can drive and park on the beach, but there is a permanant baracade (little posts and wire) that keep the traffic from being too close to the water. Trust me, I grew up and worked on N. Padre and for your situation, I'd go to Port A. Plus, there is a ton better shopping/eating in Port A. There will be a little more traffic, but I guarantee the experience will be better. However, if you do stay on N. Padre in CC, go to the beach South of the Seawall at the end of Whitecap Road. The classier locals and non-beach-trash hang out there.I live in CC and hit the beach every weekend, but in March, I avoid N. Padre and go up to Port A.
