How long do you want to ignore this user?
i posted this on someone else's thread but realize it probably needs it's own thread to get as many answers as possible...

tell me more about beaumont. i talked to a possible job opportunity there but i'm pretty happy here in bryan/college station. would moving to beaumont be completely depressing? i don't mean to be offensive but i've had 4 different people tell me that it's not a happy place to be...

btw, i am married with two little boys 3yr old and a 5 mo old and want a good place to raise a family.

stay in b/cs then. bisd is absolutely horrible. Only pt. arthur and galveston schools might be worse. There are a few decent areas of beaumont to live, but not many. Nederland, Pt. Neches, and Lumberton have excellent schools and all are about 15 min. from bmt.

Parts of Beaumont aren't so bad. The economy there is strictly tied to the petroleum industry. When that industry flourishes, so goes Beaumont and vice versa. If you are going to actually live in Beaumont, stay on the west end. Stay away from north, south and east. If you can't find a place in the west end, look at Lumberton, Pt. Neches or Nederland to raise your family. Great schools and good towns to live in. PNG/Nederland is known for its Friday night football. Lots of tradition in both communities. Academically, they are both good schools. Lumberton has been quite successful lately in football, but is known more for its academics than athletics. All three towns are good places to raise a family.

Beaumont is what you make it to be. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. The community ties there are very strong. Your only 90 miles from Houston. Decent hunting and fishing are close by. Seafood is great! High school sports is some of the best in the state.

I grew up in Beaumont and live in Bryan.
It's a no brainer for me. I wouldn't consider moving back to Beaumont.

As Buford, I grew up in Beaumont but now live in Bryan. My mom still lives there but probably only until I finish my house, not because of the town but because of her age and health. The Beaumont of today is not anything like it was 35-40 years ago but it is a nice town and like all it has it's bad spots and it's good spots. I agree with living on the west end or going to Lumberton, don't know Port Neches/Nederland area well enough to comment. Think what you would say if someone asked about living in B-CS, would you recommend the west side of Bryan or the state street area of CS, I doubt it. I would suggest going down sometime for a weekend and take a couple of days to look around and see what you think.

Thanks stonecold and 1978oldag. It gets old when all these non-residents feel the strong need to put Beaumont down. Our family enjoys our home and neighborhood on the Westend. There is crime in MidCounty too, you know. Had my car broken into on Nederland Avenue. Possibly less black people down there, but Vietnamese and Mexican gangs, I could post the news about Central Mall and more but good grief, what good does that do? There are alot of good people in all of SE Texas and there are lots of people in Beaumont working hard to have a good community.

All is true. But, I could almost guarantee you that all that gang trash is coming from Port Arthur. I don't know what it is about all the asian street trash and the south of the border mexicano garbage that is concentrated in PTA. I know most hope it stays in PTA and doesn't start filtering west and north.

you`re right. Pt. Arthur is 100 times worse than Beaumont and most of it stays in pt. arthur. Beaumont ranked fairly high on this years list of the 100 worst cities to live tho. "flight" from bmt has been going on for several yrs now and not much room left in midcounty, and has spread even further out from lumberton into silsbee now. Hamshire-Fannett is nice but it floods if it drizzles.

H-F is really nice if you want to set up a trailer on Craigen Road and sell Meth. lol. Both my friends that live in Estates of Fannett have their childen in All Saints School in Beaumont. So go figure.

Why is everyone talking about needing to move to the west end? Sure it's cleaner and the real estate is better, but is that the only reason?

Stone Cold described the area perfectly. And may I add that it's as good as you make it or as bad as you let it. I live in Beaumont now, but for raising a family, I recommend the Nederland area. Bulldogs rule!

if you like to hunt and fish that area is outstanding. toledo and rayburn (freshwater) are about an hour and a half north, and sabine lake (saltwater with access to the jetty) is about 20 minutes south. i grew up in that area. i haven't lived there since i left for aggieland in 97. that's not to say i wouldn't want to move back, it just hasn't been in the plans. i go back annually to hunt and fish with pops. also, if you like cajun culture there is a lot of it in jefferson county. port arthur even has a fun mardi gras. it's the one time of the year you can actually go to proctor street and have a good time. as for raising kids, lumberton, nederland, port neches, and hamshire/fannette are all decent. the entire region is driven primarily by the petroleum industry, with some help from rice and seafood industries.

I'd rather live in B/CS than beaumont.

Maybe the surrounding area (the LCM, PNG, Lumberton, Vidor, Silsbee(though I don't know much about Silsbee) school districts are all nice), but the big three of Orange, Beaumont, and Port Arthur have turned into absolute ghettos(and that's not racially motivated......it's EVERYBODY over large parts of all three cities). Beaumont is the least odious of the three but...

**edit** and yes I realize that there are large parts of beaumont that are alright and good people in them, same with orange and PA. You can't stand there and lie to me and tell me it's not like driving through islands of ~"ok" in a sea of "run"

You are correct. My mistake. I remember playing both schools in basketball when I was in junior high. They seemed to be the only ones that we could compete with. We were terrible.....

The fruit city....bwaaaaa haaaaaaa haaaaaaa!!!!!! Bout the only good thing there is WO-S football. Dan Hooks is as slimy as they come in Texas high school football. But, the guy knows how to surround himself with good assistants....and incredible talent.

look i'll be the first to admit that beaumont isn't wonderful, but it isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. its actually kind of similar to BCS in many ways. there are some areas that you don't go to at night, but i can think of several places in Bryan and CS that i wouldn't want to go to at night either. Granted that beaumont probably has more. The west end as stated above is the nicest area of town to live in, schools and neighborhoods are the nicest.

beaumont similar to c.s.? lol !! u havent been to bmt. lately have u. we live in mid county and other than going to sams, theres no reason to go there. Beaumont is a nasty place rivaled only by pt. arthur.

I would reccomend trying to live outside of Beaumont. Bevil Oaks, Pinewood, Northwest Forest are all nice neighborhoods outside of Beaumont, but within reasonable distance to get to work (10-15 miles).

Hardin Jefferson alum here- we kicked all you private school boys ass.

Yep. Demolished back in the fall to make room for a new house being built by their daughter. I visited them back in the summer and they made no mention of tearing it down. Got an e-mail in September saying that it was in the process of being demolished. By the time I went to the A&M-OU game it was gone. Really sad to see.
