If you cannot find a tenet for the Memorial Coliseum immediately for move in, please tear it down. It is a disgrace to the city and to the WWII veterans that it honors. The coliseum was great in its day. Everyone remembers going there to see the circus, or globetrotters, or the monster trucks, or a high school graduation. But its time has passed. Move the plaque to the veterans park and built an honorable memorial to those who gave their all for our country from our county. Do not let it just sit there, trashing our city skyline like the old county courthouse.

The last time I was in Corpus, which was about 2 months ago, I had the exact same thoughts. It really is an eyesore now, much like the old courthouse that has been sitting abandoned for as long as I can remember.

I've been traveling to corpus often the past two years for work and have been staying at a hotel near there.

My coworkers and I were discussing why that old building was there just a few days ago.

I didn't know the story behind it, sad that its a memorial and been poorly looked after.

ah! I grew up in corpus and remember going to an Alan Jackson concert there when I was like 8. Those pics are quite different than the coliseum I remember, though. Sadly, it sounds like corpus is going downhill...

aggiegreeneyes,

you don't even want to see the rest of corpus. The taggers have taken over and ever sign, fence, and gas meter in corpus is tagged up. Sunrise mall just got foreclosed on and the A/C hasn't worked for months.

Come on council! The people want it dealt with, stop ignoring the issue!

quote:
The City Council took no action Tuesday on a petition that would tear down Memorial Coliseum, instead deciding to wait on a recommendation expected in November from a council-appointed committee.

quote:
"People who understand what we're doing don't see any need to be in a rush or hurry," [Councilman Hummel] said.

Of course we don't see any need! The city is wanting to add to our collection of old run down building in the downtown area. The is no need to rush!

quote:
A committee of three council members and several residents was appointed in May 2007 to come up with a solution to the site, vacant since the American Bank Center opened in 2004. After gathering public comment last summer, the committee surmised that most residents want to keep the structure.

Come on council! We don't want to keep a decrepit building on our bayfront...

The city of CC wants tourism and industry but has rejected repeated attempts from developers, companies, and corporations to build/develop in CC. Schlitterbahn comes to mind. Why would the City of CC turn down the offer of the #1 water park in the U.S. to build here? Answer, because they are idiots and/or somebody's pocket wasn't getting lined.

How about proposing a NEW high end outdoor mall, by the dump, when one of the two malls here is bankrupt.

Let's annex parts of Padre Island, for the tax money, dredge Packery Channel, make all these promises for beach improvements and facilities, then NOT follow through on ANY of them.

Revitalize the bayfront by re-routing traffic around the discheveled Colisseum and build a 'green area', complete with 'interactive water feature' but ignore the existing Water Garden's that haven't worked in years because the city doesn't have the money to maintain it...along with the decaying Columbus Ships, again, rotting because of poor planning.

I wonder when/if they'll ever realize that people come here to DO stuff, not just sit on the grass and look at the water (and dilapitated buildings covered with graffiti).

Develop shops, restaurants, etc. along with your 'green spaces'. How about a big pier like in Santa Monica or Coney Island.

Peter.. I agree. I've lived here for only 3 mos now and see so much potential. The town really seems like it is stuck in the late 80's. Hopefully Mr. McCombs and others petitioning can get the CC city council to move on this.

Speaking of Packery Channel, what's the latest on that development? I haven't been to that part of the island recently.

What the city council did to the boat owners who had slips down on the t and l-heads is pretty inexcusable as well. When I was a kid, there used to be at least 50 sailboats out for the Wednesday night races. The last time I was down there, there were four boats.

Racer -

There are still at least 20-30 boats out there racing during the week. My office (until recently) fronted on the marina, I watched the boats quite often.

We lived in Corpus from 1996-2000. After our daughter was born, we decided we did not want to raise her there. So we moved back to Aggieland.

1984,

it's past foreclosure. IBC Bank bought it at auction and I assume is going to patch it up and find some investors to sell it to.
