We recently bought a house on Bolivar and have contmeplated moving permenantly to the area, my only reservation is, I don't know what the hell i would do. I have my undergrad and masters from A&M and I'm currently in Real Estate...any thoughts, ideas?

What's your degree in? There are always jobs at UTMB in Galveston. I know that's not real estate, but it's the largest employer around.

I would think that doing Real Estate you should be able to get a job down there without a problem. If you want to do something else, it would depend on what your degree is & how far you're willing to commute. Don't forget to figure in ferry time from Bolivar.

Not much to do there except for real estate; or construction. We have a house there also and I`d love to live there perm. as I can work from home but have to have hi speed which is pretty non existent except from a cable comp. (which is dicey at best) or satellite. Real estate is still good there and will be for quite some time. Wheres your house at? We`re off Boyt Rd. beach side.

My husband and I live in Galveston and we both commute to the Houston area for work. To us it's worth it to live here. We'd rather live where we play than live where we work.

Like someone else said, you'll need to take the ferry wait time into consideration too.

I've considered the ferry ride which can be pretty bad at times. My undergrad degree is in Agriculture, however, I also have a Master of Real Estate degree.

Our house is in Singing Sands West on Hamilton Drive.

come see us. we`re there every w/e, except in the fall when we`re in College Station ! We`re on Ocean View off of Boyt Rd. Its 5 1/2 miles from the ferry landing. Cant miss the place. A&M and/or U.S. flag hanging from the deck.

I am not in the real estate business but I was predicting (about 2 years ago)that when we saw many Houston RE companies opening a branch in Galveston that the real estate boom was about over.
I think we now have an equal number of houses for sale and real estate agents.

My friend does research for UTMB. His exact job description to me was, "I get to feed drugs to rats and watch them get high. Right on!"

A&M Galveston doesn't usually have a lot of jobs posted & the ones they do are very specific to having a maritime degree and experience. If you've got that, it's a great resource, otherwise, not so much.

Sounds like one of the jobs that my hubby had there right after he graduated. Does your friend work for Dr. Johnson?

Hmm... I don't think there were any other young guys working there when the hubby did. Granted, that was about 7 years ago now. They were trying to find a drug to be used in rehab for coke I think.

Yep, that's exactly what my friend does. He's not too old but he is about 10 years older then I am. I don't want to put his name up on the internet, but he probably did work with your husband. Great guy with a friend family.

We were down last weekend and the weather was perfect. I check the Crystal Beach.com website everyday to see the daily pic and it looks like yesterday was outstanding as well.

My wife and I could be permanent residents if we only there were decent jobs available.

I'd love to move back & sadly there are better jobs for me in the area, but my hubby keeps vetoing it. He grew up in Austin & HATES that area after living there for about 8 years.

I grew up in central Tx and although I love that area, I enjoy living on the coast as well.

Let's just say that the hubby had more than his fair share of interactions with complete racism & nut jobs. Everything from a wrecker cussing him out & saying he was going to kill him in front of a cop who chose to roll up his window instead of pay attention, having his door kicked in freshman year at TAMUG by a psycho racist campus cop (not there anymore) that was a black belt & strung out on something, to his neighbor's boyfriend taking her hostage with a shotgun & swat having to be called out. That same guy actually came back one time when I was there & tried to tell the hubby that he thought said chick was in hubby's apt & he was going in to find her. I was inside asleep & there was no way in hell the guy was coming in. Hubby prevented that & then we called the police.

Thats sucks and I'm sorry he had to experience any of that.

It does suck, and that's just the beginning. Because of all that though, we have completely different takes on the area. I grew up in TC/Galveston & will always have an affection for the place. I will admit that the racism is crazy down there though. I never even realized it until I moved away though.

I think you can find racism anywhere you go. Personally the people I have met here have been much more open-minded and accepting of others than I found in small-town central Texas.

I do think crime and drugs are a big problem in Galveston though.

Just different experiences I guess.

When you have kids shoving you around & threatening to beat you up because you're white (in elementary & intermediate school mine you), it's racism. The kids weren't on drugs. But then that was just my personal experience. I would agree crime & drugs are awful in Galveston. I had already moved up here & was on the phone with the hubby one night & he heard gunshots in the street in front of our apartment.

Well, at least there aren't any similar problems in Austin.

I don't doubt that there are somewhere in Austin... Luckily, I'm not in that school district & who knows, by the time my boys are old enough, we may not even be in Leander ISD.
