We are going to be in the Galveston area over the 4th of July. What are some of the better seafood restaurants? I've heard mixed reviews about Casey's. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Shrimp and Stuff (39th and Ave. O) is a good informal place. I've never been disappointed in Casey's. If you're anywhere near the Kemah Boardwalk make sure to give Topwater Grill in San Leon a try. MUCH better than the overpriced restaurants at the Boardwalk.

My family used to have a bay house in San Leon, when I was a kid. I've been up in the Metroplex area for 13 years, so I'm not up to date with the area.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Scroll down on this forum and you'll find a topic called "Galveston Questions". Good info on restaurants and things to do.

I started that thread and can tell you this from my experiences.

Lunch - Mosquito Cafe - Chick food, but good.

Mexican food - The Original - good Tex-Mex with very good top shelf Margs.

The Steakhose at San Luis - Outstanding steaks and excellent wine selection.

Bernardo's at the Galvez - very nice. Enjoyed the seafood.

Cafe Michael Burger - good burgers and the like.

I have not made it there yet, but everyone I spoke to raved about:

Mario's Ristorante on 61th -not to be confused with the Mario's on the seawall.

Palms M&M
Pic's on 45th
Rudy & Paco

Hope this helps...

Pics on 45th is out of business.

Rudy & Paco's=good but probably need a reservation

Seafood restaurant on 61st (can't recall name) in strip center-about 1 block from Stewart Rd--always crowded, food good and is shorts & T-shirts

Seafood Bistro--usually good--about 1/2 mile west of end of seawall

A mexican restaurant at corner of 7th & Seawall--good food.

Mmm Gorditas. Good stuff, but ya gotta bring cash. No credit cards accepted. Unless they added them since my last trip.

Leon's for Barbecue - it's on Broadway, not sure of the cross street.

Agree about the Topwater Grill - very good.

That doesn't surprise me about Pic's on 45th. I used to work there. The place was way overpriced for the neighborhood it was in and the ownership and management staff was...well, let's just say rather sketchy.

mmmm....Marios....I would also recommend Salsa's for Mexican.

Seafood..gotta go with Casey's or Giados. Both are pretty much the same, one just has higher prices.

Had Rudy and Paco's tonight. Went with the tuna (med rare of course) with jalapeno cream sauce. Outstanding. Also had the beef steak tomato salad with balsamic and blue chese. Gave a shoulder hug with my boy Paco and shook hands with our state rep and neighbor Craig Eiland. Very social night. Also, Paco's filet with mustard cognac sauce is to die for.

Sadly I have no opinion of Rudy & Paco's. The girls that I worked with decided to take me there for lunch when I graduated. Which is a very nice sentiment, BUT they ordered everyone the special & didn't ask if everyone would like it. I personally hate gravy (yes, I know that's sacrilegious in Texas), but the special was Chicken Fried Steak smothered in gravy. I think I gagged about half of it down. The plantains were awesome though.

Where is Rudy & Paco's? We'e going down Tuesday and like to eat at local places, but the chains are taking over. I miss Hill's on the pier (Pier 19 or 21?) I can eat at Joe'S crabshack here.

Thanks - we're getting to stay longer than originally planned and will have time to try it - if I can get the husband to go.

Gaido's is already on the schedule. We'll call about getting reservations, if you think we'll need to.

It might not be a bad idea for R&P, but I haven't been in that area in ages, so I'm not sure. It couldn't hurt though.

Damn you Macpappy, you're making me hungry for places I can't go. Maybe I need to visit my parents. Crap, they don't have room for me & the kids... must think of a better plan.

I had read a review in the chronicle about a little italian foods store that serves a muflatta, sounded like somewhere in the vicinity of the strand, this was a few years ago, however I think the article said the place had been there for ages. Anyone know the name, location and if it is still around and is it worth going for the muflatta?

I'm lost. I lived in a loft on the Strand for a while & I have no idea.

Couple of years ago there was an article in the paper about an imported food store on 25th near the Strand that mentioned them serving muffulettas. Have no idea what the name of the place is or if it's still there.

Edit: This article was in the Galveston paper.

Yep....that's it. I remember it being a spice and import company and thought it unusual that they served food.

Wow, I should have remembered that name considering how big the Maceo's were/are in Galveston.

Nope.....only one I've had in Galveston was at Sonny's. It was okay but not as good as other items on their menu.

Sonny's has a good one for sure. Not the best, but it will get the job done.

DiBella's has an awesome pork chop lunch special on Weds. You should also try his steak. Not your typical grilled steak. It is served in a marsala type sauce. Go ahead and top it off with crab meat. Also, their complimentary garlic bread is addictive. Especially if you dip it in marinara sauce.

Thank you so much for the Rudy & Paco's recommendation. Probably the best meal I've ever had! A bit pricey, but very, very good. I would recommend stopping across the street at the Stork Club for drinks before hand. Happy hour until 7:00. We had 3 vodka/sevens and a white russian and the bill was $12.75. The chicken fried steak we saw others eating looked really, really good too.

Try the snapper with the rasberry chipolte sauce.
