That shooting was years ago and it is still the first thing that pops in my mind when I see the U&I!

The shooting had a happy ending of sorts. The killer went to the joint and made a clever escape. He stashed cardboard and after he got enough, he wrapped it all over himself and put his clothes on over it and went over the barbed wire or concertina fence--the cardboard protected him from getting cut.

The prison guys could not figure out how he made it over the fence without getting cut to ribbons.

They got the dogs out but could not catch him. It was like he disappeared.

A couple of weeks later his body floated to the top in a local waterway.

He tried to swim it to throw the dogs off, the cardboard soaked up the water, weighed him down and he drowned.

Case closed.

On the recommendation of you guys I went to Floyd's in the Bluff, thinking I could finally get a good CFS somewhere in CC besides the Town Club (not a member).

Maybe you have not been there in a while? Maybe you got used to it as a kid?

The meat was the usual pre-fab pounded piece of inferior meat covered with a pre-fab batter that separates when it is dropped in the deep fat frier. The gravy was some combination of water, milk and flour and was as close to tasteless as you can get.

The fries were generous in number and out of the pre-fab bag.

Grade: the usual cookie cutter fast food junk you get everywhere in this town now.

I wish we had one restaurant in this town that bought decent quality meat, pounded in the flour themselves, added maybe a little spice and preferably cooked it in grease that is not also used to cook the chicken and, I swear they do this in some places, fish.

Then they would actually make some gravy from the previous drippings so that it had some taste and the gravy was not some bland mixture out of a package.

There is a joint in Zapata, of all places, that does that and people beat a path to their door.

Let us all keep looking and hoping.

And I must sadly report that the quality of the Greek food served on the weekends at George's in the Bluff has been dropping off for a while.

They are closed on Sunday but I will go tomorrow and will take all my teeth.

Thanks for the reminder, we need those sometimes. The reminders, and the teeth.

Went to Nolans on Airline tonight.

The food was not so good.

The salad was just chopped up iceberg lettuce with a slice of not yet ripe tomato and some out of the jar dressing.

You know you are in for a mediocre piece of meat when it comes to you in a square and the crust falls off when you cut into it. This is the same pre fab crusted meat patty every other fast food joint in town uses.

The gravy was runny but a little more tasty than at Floyd's.

The iced tea was pretty decent and the ice seemed frozen.

I will keep looking and report back if I ever find a good chicken fried steak in this town.

I recall eating a pretty good one at P.O.E.T.S. once.

Free, I recall there were a few decent eateries in Victoria at one time. Any now?

The place in the mansion at Berclair was pretty decent when I ate there a year or so ago.

Double J Eatery supposedly has a good CFS, I hear that they are hand battered, but I;ve never eaten there. Honestly I think the best CFS comes from home. I've never been to a place where the CFS wasn't that preformed all batter crap.

Free: back in the fifties when I was a kid every town in Texas had at least one restaurant that boasted of its famous CFS. And they were very good. Of course, that was back in the day when all the fries were hand cut.

It is just amazing to me that what was considered the epitome of Texas food can't be bought much of anywhere anymore. Thanks for the heads up on the Victoria place.

Next time I am in Victoria I will try it, thanks

Huisache, if you ever find yourself in Aransas Pass on A Sunday morning/afternoon, then hit up "The Butter Churn". I ate there today with my folks and THEY have the best chicken fried steak, it's actually STEAK that is hand battered and fried and it is delicious. Now, it is a buffet style restaurant, and lots of old folks like you eat there after church, but it has great food.

I'm upset at Nolan's for disappointing us. Just for this thread, I tried the CFS at Charlie's Catfish on Staples and, I think it is, McArdle. I will not recommend it. I saw that place in Aransas Pass once and figured it has good Southern-style food. Thanks for posting about it! Back a hunnert years ago or so when I was still a student at A&M, there was excellent CFS at a restaurant in Culpepper Plaza. By the time my sister was a student from '92 - '96, it was no longer there. Bummer.

Gig 'em!

I do know that they don;t always have CFS, only on certain days of the week, like Sunday. The menu changes from lunch to dinner too. But it is damn good food.

OK. Drive over to Refugio. Go to Moya's. Get the CFS, dry. As good as it gets.

went to the Butter Churn yesterday. No chicken fried steak but it was pretty good in terms of the side dishes.

went to Jampa's this afternoon and their chicken fried steak was not bad; but beware the rolls. They cook them while they are sitting in honey (the waitress told me) and so the bottoms are soggy as dough.

Went to Jampa's on Friday. The chicken fried steak was obviously fresh and never frozen. The batter was very tasty, and the steak was tender. The size was very disappointing. Overall, I would grade it as a "B." Not a B-, and not a B+...just a B. I would rate it above Floyd's on the Bluff but behind Nolan's, and we have had some bad reports in this thread about Nolan's. If anyone finds a good chicken fried steak, start a new thread and let us know!

This is my 4715th post and the toughest one I have ever had to write. But here goes.....Lone Star Free is right---about the CFS at the Butter Churn. It is made out of real meat, not that cardboard frozen fare you get almost everywhere now. Mighty tasty.

The sides were very good and the salad bar more than ample.

If I have one complaint, and I always do, it has to do with the clientele. I lived in Aransas Pass during the summer of '75 when there was still a sizable shrimp fleet and it was the most interesting town I ever spent any time in. The shrimpers were always drunk, always killing each other and had vocabularies as varied as the salad bar at the Butter Churn. A more charming, though lethal, bunch of characters I have never met. The customers at the Butter Churn of our day were a very amiable, family oriented bunch of church goers that appeared to be missing any psychopaths or yuppies.

I highly recommend it.
