Has anyone heard any word on whether TAMUCC is getting a football program? I heard about 18 months ago that the school was interested in starting one. I think that would be a wonderful addition to the university. Maybe they could build a stadium on Ocean Drive or some where near the bay front.

Del Mar College use to field a team many many years ago. They were the vikings. I haven't heard anything recent about TAMUCC.

UCC had a football team in the early 60's.I had a cousin who played there and he gave me his letterjacket

TAMUCC getting a football team is so far from happening it shouldn't even be a thought. The cost of starting a FB team from scratch is astronomical. To put it it in perspective, UTSA has been doing a case study to add a FB program to the school and they still dont have one. UTSA is bigger, more established, growing faster, in a bigger market, has a larger campus (land wise), and is in a city with lots of talented football players.

Top things to look at:

Where are they going to play?
Where are they going to practice?
Where are they going to house the coaches/players on campus?
How are they going to pay for all the equiptment?
How are they going to pay for the coaches/staff?
How are they going to fund the scholarships?
How much money will it cost for travel?

First of all, TAMUCC doesn't have anywhere for a FB team to play. They dont even have a basketball facility on campus so where are they going to put a FB facility?

If you are thinking Buc Stadium or Cabiness Stadium, get real. A college FB program that is going to be competing with SWT, SFA, SHSU, etc, need their own stadium, not a HS stadium.

It's not going to happen unless the City of CC decides, in conjunction with TAMUCC, to build a new, appropriate football stadium somewhere in CC, which will never happen.

So...IMHO, don't hold your breath.

I think it'd be sweet to have college football in CC, but where are you going to put something like this?

Texas State

Sam Houston State

Northwestern State

Central Arkansas

Maybe they can get a good deal on the Orange Bowl, then move it to Cabiniss Field.

Cabiniss Field. I knew it didn't look right when I spelled it.

From what i hear the Orange Bowl isn't in much better shape than Buc Stadium.

Peter, so if I understand you correctly, you don't think it will happen? HeHe Thanks for your insight.

per the agreement to become members of SLC, they MUST field a team by a certain date. Used to work closely with old asst. Ath director.

I am sorry that I can not remember the exact date.

Aint going to happen. Can't afford to build a stadium that would meet NCAA Div I or Div II standards

They did a study a year ago and said that if somebody stepped up and gave them a jillion or if the students would bump their fees into the stratosphere it could happen. It wont.

Last time I saw the AD, Brian Teter, he mentioned that a case study was being done for football. If I had to guess the case study will basically say what Peter Gibbons already has stated.

Until TAMU-CC breaks the 12k student pop. mark there is now way. The school also needs to buy up some more land near by.

some expansion info
more land:

Any word on the requisition of the golf course near campus?

Lamar is bringing football back 2010, possibly'09 and they just cracked 10K students, mostly commuters.

The Oso Golf Center is not going to the school. That was the original proposal and it caught heat so they decided to part with the land near the treatment plant where all the little league fields are.

They should have built the campus downtown from the start. There were and are a ton of vacant lots and empty buildings there. Would have been an awesome urban campus.

per Brian D'Angelis old asst AD....they MUST field team... no exception.... I am telling you...as crazy as it sounds..it has to happen.

Seems like A&M-CC is intent on shutting down A&M-Kingsville...sad, but oh well....

Indeed it does. Not just with sports, but considering TAMUCC is trying to start up an Engineering School, and one of TAMUK's biggest schools is the CoEngr...you do the math.

A&I had more students when I was there in the 60s than it does now, in part due to the war and in part due to the lack of alternatives. Now you have the community college in Beeville and its satelite campuses, CC A&M, UH-Victoria and the buildup at Southmost (now Texas-Brownsville) and Pan Am and the A&M campus in Laredo and the little towns that used to feed Kingsville are sending the kids elsewhere.

I am hoping that since CC is breaking gentleman's agreement ( CC got nursing school and Kingsville kept Engineering) that Kingsville opens a nursing school. There is a shortage of nurses anyway....
