Is this the board you would post on for Texarkana related topics?

Are there any decent school districts there?

Pleasant Grove has always been good in the past.

PG is the best school district.

What else do you want to know about the TXK?

Are the good neighborhoods primarily North and West?

North of I-30 in the Summerhill and Richmond Roads area is your best bet. That's also the PG school district.

You might also checkout Hooks. I've got a cousin that lives there and he seems to like it. It's only a 20 minute drive.

I forgot to ask, you're not considering the AR side, correct?

No, just the Texas side. I am not for sure headed there, but I am trying to compare it to other possible landing spots. So far, I like Texarkana because it allows fo rural or semi-rural living, has at least one good public school system, and the cost of housing is pretty low.

Any information you can give me is appreciated. It sounds like you know the place, so just tell me everything you know, good and bad.

My wife and I lived there for about nine months back 96-97. I thought it was a great place even though Arkansas was a block away - at least the Arkansas side is wet. Wife didn't like it too much cause some times you get downwind from the paper mills and it get quite odiferous to say the least. Good people, good healthcare options, good schools, and if Fat Jacks hasn't burnt down again, for the third time, a good place to get a cold beer.

That sounds good. I am a boring guy, married with a bunch of kids. Living in DFW just doesn't seem to fit me.

todd, based on your above post, TXK might be a town for you. Being a self-described "boring guy, married with a bunch of kids", I'll not waste time talking about clubs, bars, etc.

good
-zero traffic compared to DFW
-excellent healthcare systems
-decent mall and box retailers. Plus a good theater and golf course.
-plenty of chain restaurants (this is a big deal in that part of East TX. People from the sticks will drive for miles to eat at Olive Garden).
-you can be at a Shreveport dice table in about an hour. Hot Springs is close as well
-the airport has/had regional flights. I'm not sure if the sequester messed with that.
-A&M-TXK. Looking at your profile, it might be a good place to land a job.

bad
-proximity to Arkansas. You can literally walk across the street and be in a different(and crappy)state.
-not much cultural/art activities going on. I I don't care about that stuff, but some people do.

Not a bad town. I'd move back there anytime.

You nailed it. I am interviewing there in a couple of weeks, but I'm a bit concerned about some of the information I've dug up about the place. See these for example:

Do you have any contacts there that can speak to whether the situation has been remedied. It could be the case that the ouster of the president cleaned up the whole problem and now the new administration is cleaning house.

Find a phone number there on Texarkana's campus for Kelly Coke. I'm not sure what department she works in for the school but she's a great Aggie, was heavily involved while at A&M (College Station), and is just a class act individual. She is probably able to answer some of your questions/concerns and can give you an honest vibe regarding the feel on campus. She's class of '03 I believe.

Todd, Texarkana ISD is by far the best school district. It is not without its ethnic challenges, but it offers the widest and best opportunity for both academics and athletics in my opinion. Texarkana is a great place to raise a family and close enough to Dallas, Shreveport, or Little Rock if you need big town excitement. You don't spend a half day going to and from one place to another and there is a good offering of professional, social, and family services, as well as worship opportunities. Let me know if i can help. Have lived her most of my 65 years. Good bunch of Ags, as well.

Brew, would your dad have been anywhere around a THS '65 grad? What area were the grandfolks in?

I have to agree about Texarkana ISD being the best in the area, of course I am going to be a little biased considering it is where I graduated from. The opportunities they have for their students are just so numerous, like Tomcat said both accedemically and athletically, that I was extremely prepared for my time here at TAMU.

Beyond that I really enjoyed growing up in Texarkana. There are enough things to do in the area or just a quick drive to the bigger cities around that you can keep yourself entertained but not have to deal with dallas traffic on a daily basis. I always look forward to my trips back there to see friends and family just wish I could go more often.

The Todd - did you make the move to TXK? If so or if you still have questions send me your contact info to benking02 at gmail dot com. I would welcome the opportunity to visit with you about TXK. My wife and I really like it here.

I live in the PG area and love it. Work at TISD so I'm kinda bias when it comes to school districts. Redlick is also a very nice quiet area.

Love Texarkana.
As I understand it, the problems with the campus have been resolved.

I've lived in Texarkana 7 of the last 10 years. Great place to live and raise a family. We aren't originally from Texarkana, but we honestly can't imagine living anywhere else. You really can't go wrong with TISD or PG, but both have distinctly different cultures, so you should just see which one fits you best. For 0-8 grade, Red Lick ISD is an exemplary school district year in, year out. As for TAMU-T, they have a new president in place, and there seems to be lots of excitement for the future. Good luck!

If you have kids who are good at football...don't waste your time sending them to PG. The only sports PG cares about are basketball and baseball.

Brew, Lynda, as I recall, is near Springlake Park area. Nice area. Sorry about your loss. You're right about the jeans and shirts and white socks held up with rubber bands. I was ever allowed to have a flat top. But the Class if '57 had its dreams!!
