My wife has to go to Tyler for a couple of days next month by herself. Any areas of town that she should avoid when booking a hotel?

Avoid north. Stay south. There are some on the east and south loop or south broadway. Stay in those.

South Broadway and she can't go wrong.

I know this sounds crazy but the Sleep Inn and Suites is very nice hotel... It's in South Tyler and close to restaurants, mall etc...
Stay away from the hotels at the intersection, or general vicinity of, Hwy 69 & Loop 323 on the nortside ... many many street walkers, hookers, etc.

Hookers gotta eat too.
There are some "newer" hotels in the Grande/South Broadway area. Start there.
Broadway and Grande.. Hilton Garden Inn. Further south on Broadway there's a Courtyard by Marriott. Both very nice for Tyler.
I second sleep inn. Spent three months there last year.
Family friend of mine owns the best western - pretty nice place and great location.
We have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn twice and it is nice.
