More E.Tx lore...

Guess what McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Fletcher Davis and Athens, Texas all have in common ?

Fletcher not only got credit with inventing something in Athens (and sold a ton of it it at the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair) he also coined the term "french-fried potatoes" and they caught-on and spread throughout like wild-fire.

Well, during the 2003 invasion of Iraq there was an anti-French sentiment in the US (since France showed much opposition to that invasion) and a lot of "Merican folks called 'em "Freedom Fries".

(Would not have hurt good old Fletcher's feelings anyhow.)

Uncle Fletch Davis invented his ground beef sandwich down at the Robinson's Drug Store about the turn of the century. He entered and won the 1904 Worlds Fair and nobody really knows why it was named the Hamburger.. As for the fries. Fletch served his burger with a side of fried potatoes and tomatoe sauce. When asked by a reporter if he came up with that dish, Fletch replied " Na, I got that idea from a friend up in Paris." Hence the name French Fries.

The only thing worse than a poor loser is a poor winner.

I always knew about the hamburger, but that fry nugget is news to me... Awesome and cool info.
