The ribs at Country Tavern are good, but if you want the best all-around bar-b-que, as awful as Longview is, the best place in East Texas is Carter's on 259. That place is sick... They make a certain amount each day, and when it's gone, they go home. It really is outstanding. The only reason to go to that city in my opinion.

Agreed Orangeboy, the reasons are few and far between to travel to longview.

I used to love Blalock's in Mt. Pleasant growing up, but that guy has gone CHEAP! The sandwichs I swear are half the size they used to be. As are the portions on their plates.

I love Stanley's in Tyler. But I've only been out here a few months so I haven't had a chance to try all of the other notorious joints.

I tried the Country Tavern in Kilgore Monday.

The ribs were GREAT!! Some of the best I've had. The sausage was ok. Nothing special.

Biggest dissappointment was that the brisket SUCKED! I went a little bit after lunch (1:30 or so) so maybe it had sat under a heat lamp for too long or something, but it was dry as crap and had to chew it for forever.

The sauce was ok. I realize that sauces are a matter of taste. I like my leaning toward the sweet side of things. Their sauce was more on the vinegary side which I know some people love.

Would have been at best a C- but the ribs were good enough on their own to pull it up to a B.

I've only lived in the Tyler area for a little over a year now, and the clear favorite is Stanley's in Tyler.

The only reason to go to the tavern is the ribs. The other items are not what they are known for.

Stampede is great. I go everytime I come back to visit. I miss their brother-in-law.

there used to be a place in tyler called Dub's out on 155 toward lake palestine - best bbq ive ever had. too bad it didnt make it.

Yeah I'm with you all the way. I was just thinking back to being a kid. Since I started going to Bodacious in MP (probably around HS/college) I figured out I had it all wrong. Not sure what my parents were thinking taking me to that other place. But when he started skimping on portions, we changed it up....and haven't looked back.

Shep's in Palestine? Really? Bruce is a great guy but the food is just very average.
