When Lee opened in 1958, the two Tyler schools were in different classifications. In 1958 and 1959, the rivals played non-district games.

The University Interscholastic League, the governing body for all extra-curricular activities in the state, reveals its biennial realignment on Monday. And John Tyler, which turned in a reported 2,046.5 students on snapshot day back in mid-October, looks to be on the cutting edge of dropping to 4A.
The UIL established the most-recent cutoff for Class 5A at 2,085 students in 2008. John Tyler, holds out hope of competing in the state's largest classification. That, despite the rampant rumors of the Lions dropping into a district that could include area 4As?????, and even Longview, which dropped the previous…Longview turned in an enrollment of 2084.5.
JT and Lee's current district, 11-5A, includes DeSoto, Mesquite, Mesquite Horn, North Mesquite.
For JT to stay in 5A, however, the UIL would have to do something it never has since the creation of 5A in 1980 -- drop the cut-off number, which was 1,910 in 2002, 1,925 in 2004, and 1,985 in 2006. JT has been in the bottom 10 percent the past decade-plus.
