I've never explored east Texas. What are some cool drives or places that you would recommend?

I like to take photos although I couldn't frame a picture to save my life. I know there have to be some places that are so cool I couldn't skru them up but I don't know where they are.

Are there any bike trails you would recommend?

I've explored the western USA extensively and know New Mexico, Utah and even Idaho better than east Texas. I am hoping to correct this situation.

Thank you.

Take a swamp tour on Caddo Lake.

Leave your stupid bike at the house. That crap is not tolerated in East Tx.

ignore redneck rover on the bike comment. are you a roadie or off-roader?

Tyler State park has a nice 14 mile mtb trail. As far as driving areas I don't know because honestly when you live here it can be boring so you'll need to check out some touristy site or something. You could drive though the Azalea District in Tyler for about 30 minutes.

Ignore Tyler completely. It's full of Dallas wannabees d-bags like PG.

In fact, you won't even see the crap town from I-20.

Head further east.

No need to worry, there are too many damn pine trees in the way to see anything worthy of a picture.

They are all outside of East Texas. Really, other than some really nice folk and a handful of good eateries, East Texas (deep East Texas anyways) has little to offer outside of pine trees and mayhaw jelly.

Check out the "Trail Between the Lakes". Its a nice nature trail between Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend reservoir.

1794 off of Highway 59 is really pretty. It's near the Beckville/Tatum area and you can finally get on top of a hill to see over some trees and see the valley area.

Ignore slicer, there is plenty of good stuff to see in East Texas. Caddo Lake is definitely recommended. Some of the backroads between Longview and Lake O' the Pines are good roads as well. You might check out some of the wineries along the way. Definitely get some mexican food while your here. Its really a beautiful area and people that spend too much time in East Texas typically forget that. As far as mountain biking. There is a place that I ride dirtbikes weekly when I'm back in the states. Its called Barnwell Mountain. Its not really a mountain, but it is probably the highest point in East Texas. There is 5,000 acres of trails out there and what I ride is reserved for dirtbikes only, because they are too narrow for jeeps and atvs. I don't see why you couldn't ride Mountain Bikes out there though. It is incredible single track trails through the hills with some great views. If you go around the whole loop its 17 miles. The park is operated by the State of Texas and many enduro riders consider it one of the best in America. Its located just east of Gilmer and it cost $20 a day to ride there or $15 a day after you buy a $40 a day membership. You can get more info at: http://www.texasmotorizedtrails.com/

After living in Dallas for three years, I must admit that I miss east Texas. I think its one of those things that you don't miss till its gone. The people in big cities are so much different and the rush lifestyle really gets old. I miss hunting, fishing, doing outdoors stuff, and down-to-earch people. More than anything I miss my family.

Thankfully I'm getting transferred so I'm moving back to east Texas this weekend.

Congrats, the same thing happened to me. I moved back from Dallas last summer and I love the laid back lifestyle here. Plenty of hunting, fishing, lakes, and outdoor stuff to do. I'm much happier and less stressed here.

If I could even make nothing more than my salary % against the much cheaper cost of living, I would move back to Paris. But alas, I can't.

I've lived all over Texas . . . Paris, Corpus, Amarillo, Waco, San Angelo. Its a close call between San Angelo and East Texas, but I loved it there.

Maybe something like this would be good for someone wanting to explore East Texas.

Texas Forest Trail

I read an article about San Augustine in Texas Parks and Wildlife recently that was pretty good and made me want to see the town next time I am in the area.

Paris? Seriously?

That town has the term "suckage" copyrighted. I lived there for three years and couldn't wait for my first chance to bolt.

-it's a dry town, you have to drive to Sun Valley or Toco get any beer

-restaurants are crap

-cops have little to do besides hassling people over dumb chit

I'd much rather live in Texarkana, Marshall, Longview or Tyler.
