Really, as long as you stay away from South Longview (anything south of Hwy 80) and old Pine Tree, you should be fine. Depending on your price range, there are a lot of nice neighborhoods off of Hawkins Pkwy. There are also 2 nice apartment complexes; one is on the corner of Bill Owens and H.G. Moseley and the other is the Longfellow Arms.
What Mustang said. Also, and shockingly I might add, there have been some lofts developed in downtown so you might want to check those out.
I know nothing about them other than they are brand new.
If you have money for a house there are dozens of nice neighborhoods to choose from. It's actually amazing at the number of high-end homes in Longview.
We've had 20-30 engineering co-ops at the place I work in Longview and I think 95% of them stayed at the Summer Brook apartments on Bill Owens Pkwy, just south of loop 281. If you want to rent but don't want an apartment, then look for a townhouse in Town Lake Village. It's behind the Butcher Shop on McCann Road.
I just signed at summer green apts. I think its in a pretty good area, kinda close to the high school which I didnt realize, but I only got a 6 month lease so if I dont like it I can always go elsewhere. I think all the "summer... apartments" are owned by the same company so hopefully it is run well.
