Due to some family concerns, I am attempting to move back to Longview from the Dallas area. I have been out of school 7 years and have a great deal of experience in customer service, sales, and management. Does anyone here know of any good places to look for employment? I have tried everything that I can think of, and it seems unless I'm a doctor, engineer, or pipe fitter, I'm out of luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not a lot of industry in the Longview area. It's really turned into a Service oriented city.
However, there are a number of smaller towns around Longview with Mills and Plants that might offer solid employment.

Lone Star Steel (U.S. Steel) has a big plant about 30 minutes north of Longview near northern tip of Lake of the Pines. It employs a large number of folks and pays decent.

Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn't sure what kind of shape Lone Star was in these days. Ironically, my grandfather was plant v.p. back in the '70's . . .

MustangAg, I am from Longview and the job market is actually picking up nicely with the renewed gas boom. One great place to look for employment, believe it or not, might be the Harrison County Courthouse (in Marshall) any weekday morning.

The landmen are lined up outside the door waiting for it to open every day so they can get Haynesville Shale related work started. There is a lot of work coming very soon, but it's oil and gas related and the money will be good. Look to that industry, then work your way out from there.

Have you tried the business side of healthcare? I'm a former employee of Good Shepherd Medical Center and they are now the largest employer in Gregg County if I'm not mistaken.

Remember you have an entire business behind the management of a hospital that is analogous to most business units you would find at any other large company.

I'd be open to any of those suggestions, but how do you find out about those jobs? I'm registered with TWC (big waste of time) and constantly check jobs.com, monster, and the news-journal. I'm just kind of frustrated at this point and since I haven't looked for a job in over 8 years, I don't really know what to do.

In reference to the landmen jobs; what exactly do they do? My family has all worked for the oil field in various capacities, but I don't know much about that end of the business . . . I appreciate all of the suggestions you guys have made . . .

You could go to www.longviewusa.com/manufacturingsearch.php

this will give you an idea of some of the larger employers in Longview along with how many employees, contact ifo, etc. it's a good place to start without searching all the job boards.

Can you be a little more specific with your experience?

Most of my career has been spent in a sales related environment, however, I also have a lot of experience in departmental management and some technical experience. I am not really looking for another "sales" job, but I do have a great deal of customer service background and am good at task management and high stress situations. Really, at this point, I'm open to anything that has a steady income and benefits . . .
