My boundries: Red River on the north, south from Bonham to Greenville to Terrell and then to Ennis. Follow I-45 south from Ennis to Huntsville (Coriscana, Fairfield, Buffalo, Centerville, Madisonville) to Huntsville. Due east from Huntsville to the Sabine. Follow Sabine north until it heads west back into Texas, and follow LA/TX border up to the Texarkana.

Houston and the surrounding metropolitan areas are not East Texas.

Here's my opinion:

Screw Bonham - too far west

Screw Greenville - too close to Dallas.

Start at Paris. HWY 82 to Texarkana.

Then 59 south to I-20.

I-20 through Tyler and then stop at Canton.

Incorporate towns like Lufkin, Palestine and Nacogdoches into the system.

It's not as much a definition as it is an equation:


A shiitload of Pine Trees + A shiitload of catfish restaraunts + A shiitload of methed out hillbillies = East Texas

the difference between East Texas and Arkansas:

East Texans, on average, retain 5 more teeth over the course of their lives

North border - Red River
South border - Gulf
Western border - edge of geographic region of Piney Woods
East border - state border

East is east. You can't say north of I20 is east and south of I20 is not.

South Texans hold their wine by the stem...it keeps it cold. North texans hold their wine glass in the palm of their had...it makes the wine warmer. East Texans hold their wine by the sack.

From the edge of the "pine curtain" in the west to the LA border in the East. Excluding Houston.
