I'm driving through tomorrow (friday) and am looking for something good to eat:

either:
1) a cool historic place (downtown area, maybe?) that has character
2) great cheap texmex with ice cold beer

Any ideas?? the less english my waitress speaks the better, probably. TIA

I'm pretty sure this has been covered on here. Just use the search feature.

Brownsville:

If you are in Browntown be sure to try the Vermillion. It is a great place to eat. Ask anyone they shoud know. It is right off Bocachica and Paredes line road.

In Harlingen, try Las Vegas. No beer though.

Super Cream in Brownsville.

Legit Mexican food Tampico style.

Deffinty not Tex Mex.

Rio Grande Grill is good but I think of it as more of a BBQ place than a TexMex place. Named a Top 50 BBQ place by Texas Monthly. I will say their brisket enchiladas are awesome, and their tortilla soup is very good as well.

Harlingen - La Playa, Los Asados

Brownsville - Antonios, Vermillion

There are many more start ups. There are also many not technically "texmex" but they can help but have some good stuff. Rio Grande Grill in Harlingen is excellent.
