CowtownRed ... You are correct but alert readers caught that geographical gaffe seconds after I hit the Submit button.

But more important, perhaps you can confirm or deny that the Raider QB that came off the bench in about '85 game to destroy Ag's hopes at Kyle Field was the breakout performance of one B.J. Tolliver. I will never forget the shock, amazement and utter dismay of that "nobody" that came into the game and beat the heck out of "somebody."

You are correct WestTx ... adjoins Tarrant Co to the northwest. "Eighter from Decatur, the county seat of Wise."

Edit: Tolliver now lives in Shreveport, I think and became a professional golfer after football career.

Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong but I believe it was in '85 we were playing Tech at Kyle and in the first quarter knocked out the #1 Tech QB. We were not distressed by this event and relaxed as Tech sent in a freshman QB replacement ... and to the best of my knowledge that QB was a red-headed unknown named Billy Joe Tolliver and darned if he didn't turn in a Joe Montana performance and beat us on our home turf.

That was indeed BJT.

Since I obviously only skimmed and didn't read thoroughly, was Britt Hagar mentioned?

Also, very obscure Larry Linne from Midland had a swim through the Patriots in the late '70s I believe. Calvin Riggs did a couple of years with the Redskins. And Darryl somebody or other who played at Midland High in the mid 80s spent a couple of years with the Jets, I believe it was.

Cowtown .... Britt Hager was mentioned earlier but his name was misspelled so no one picked up on it.

Hager played LB for the Longhorns in the mid-80s. He gained great disfavor with Ags about the state when he made a disparaging remark to a reporter before the '88 Turkey Day game that went something like this: "Damn Aggies are like cockroaches. They are everywhere!" Recall that? The uproar before the game was great to get the fan's adrenalin pumping.

He was one of the great ones from Odessa that had a great career in the NFL with the Eagles and Broncos.

Hagar was a tough dude.

My brother played against him twice in the 1983 season.

c-jags- I moved to TN on 1/1/05 ( with the irony of listening to the CB game while crossing the TN state line..... )

My wife moved here in Nov of '06. We sold the house in 7/05. I know, to much info....

We sure did like living out there, but the money is so much better than in Angelo for the same type of job and they just closed the company I used to work for this last month. Guess I made the right choice..

I wondered what happened to the Weisuhn Aggie BB player. I guess he did fit Billy Clyde's vision....

I believe Pierce Holt played hight school ball at Marlin. After his NFL days he retired to his ranch at Christoval (near San Angelo.) Link below is a nice bio of apparently a good man and great ball player.

Pierce was also the first player in the NFL to get a guaranteed contract. 7Mil to play for ATL and then got injured the first or second year.

He is a true rags to riches story. Very humble. Think his ranch is in Schleicher Co, if I remember right.

He provides good support to ASU athletics.

I'm gonna go ahead and give this tread a bump and add E.J. Holub, Lubbock High School Grad '57 (born in Schulenburg). He was Tech's first all american in football and played for the KC Chiefs in Superbowls I and IV. He is the only player to start two superbowls from different sides of the ball, First as a linebacker, then as a center. The move to offense was due in part to his 11 knee surgeries during is playing career (20 in is lifetime) It prompted a reporter to say "it looks like you got in a knife fight with a midget!"

I remember going to Tech games with my dad and watching Billy Joe Tolliver play. Apparently he was just a great athlete, and I was told he shot in the 80s in golf his first time out. Not sure if that is true.

Not to take anything away from the great Cooper Robbins who coached powerhouse teams at Breckenridge in the 40s and 50s but some folks hinted that oilmen in the area paid top wages to daddys of talented recruits. Breckenridge was Bud Wilkenson's prime picking ground for the legendary OU teams in the 50s.

I had a neighbor that played for Breckenridge during that era, and went on to play college ball at Baylor. Some of his teammates that went to OU never knew what it felt like to lose a game 'till they turned pro.

Good spring break reading material for you folks who may have missed it the first time around. These old tales never go out of date. I am sure additions can be made.

Pretty cool to read about my moms little brother on here. Just hung out with my Uncle Clayton not too long ago. Her other little brother, Doyle, was the other starting DT besides Pierce at Angelo State. He was undrafted but made the Packers practice squad and got cut.

From everyone that I talked to, my moms older brother, Darryl, was the best athlete out of the whole bunch. Played DE/punter at ASU, averaging around 43 yards a punt. Kind of had a problem with authority and told the coaches to stick it when they told him he couldn't rodeo and play football.

Karl, my moms other little brother started farming immediately after high school. His son Slade played basketball at A&M for Billy G. on the teams with Logan Lee and Acie. Slades older brother Trey played QB at ASU, his little brother Chase and little sister Paige played basketball at ASU as well.

Kenny Vacarro, but I think he finished at Early. Jaxon Shipley. Few others that played in the preseason and/or made practice squads, Chance Pierce, Kirby Freeman, Lee Grimes.

Moses - Sammy Baugh was born in Temple. He played his high school football in the 20s at Sweetwater and college ball at TCU where he was All-American. I don't know when he came to the Rotan area but I know he had a ranch north of Rotan near the Double Mountains in the 50s. He still lives at the ranch and over the years has hosted clinics for a number of promising college quarterbacks.

I was about to say "I thought Baugh was dead"

And then in realized that post was made 11 years ago!

But Baugh didn't move to Sweetwater until 1930...when he began playing HS football there
