How long do you want to ignore this user?
After a visit to A&M over spring break, my daughter declared these to be her people! She is a junior and will apply as soon the date opens up next fall. She is 4th her class, so an auto admit. I have requested on Facebook to join midlands moms club but have not gotten a response. She would love to connect with some recent grads here and pick your brain. I also need the fastest route to CS , I think my GPS took me a weird way. She had an invite for a breakfast hosted by Concho for top students interested in engineering but it fell on day that she was traveling with FFA. Her councilor said there were Aggies employeed there. She was pretty bummed to miss meeting with y'all.

It's not the most direct route, but I-20 to highway 6 always seemed the quickest for me. I imagine it's only gotten faster as the speed limits have been raised and a lot of highway 6 has expanded to 4 lanes since I was at A&M '02-'07.

Canyon is right. 20 to Abilene, 36 from Abilene to Temple. Temple to Hearne, then CS.

Tried that twice in back in '02. I-20 to Hwy 6 was 1/2 hour quicker. Hwy 6 has been much improved since then, so Hwy 36 may have been as well.

I'd say try both and see what's quicker. Based on my outdated experience, I'll put money on Hwy 6.

Several of the small towns along Hwy 6 (Calvert especially) would stack the descending speed limit signs close together and try to ticket for hitting the 55 mph zone too quickly. Pay attention to the descending speed limit signs in any small town and hit the brakes if you have to. A lot of time cancelling the cruise won't slow you down fast enough for the changing speed zones.

36 is much improved over the last few years, and I detest driving through Waco. Your mileage may vary.

Bottom line, the OP and her kid are going to be driving that same freaking road a jillion times over the next few years. One route is probably not going to be much different from another, either in time or convenience.

Try each route, decide which is quicker, use that one when you are in a hurry. Use the others to see different parts of our great state, and fight boredom. Keep in mind that different routes will sometimes vary in travel time due to construction, weather, special events, etc.

For instance, it's almost a dead heat whether to drive from here to Aggieland via 84/I-20/36, 84/I-20/6 or 287/I-35/6. But I would never go through Waco when the cubbies are playing football, nor through Ft. Worth if I was going to hit at rush hour.

Thanks everyone. My GPS took me through Killean. Then to San Angelo. I need to update it, before this summer, as she wants to go back and visit the campus again. Would anyone here be able to maybe meet for coffee or tea so she could talk with you about housing, food, and all the important things in a teens mind. I will be with her of course, cause uh that would be weird to meet up with a minor.

The fastest route I found was actually midland to Austin, Austin to CS. I-20 is fast but if you catch bad traffic on 36 or 6 (semi trucks, farm trucks) you can be in for a long ride.

you guys are missing the most important highlight of the 36 route...

I-20 to Abilene - 36 from Abilene to Temple
stay on 36 to downtown Temple to Hiway 53 east to
Green's Sausage House in Zabcikville
http://www.greenssausagehouse.com/
then take FM 485 to Hearne and 6 on to BCS

buy a hunk off the big wheel of yellow cheese, a sleeve of crackers and some of the dried beef sausage sticks -

My daughter is class of '08, so not a recent graduate but a very proud AGGIE. She would love to meet with you and your daughter if you would like her to. If you are interested, reply with your email address, and she will get in touch with you. Good luck, and gig'em
