I just accepted a job with Baker Hughes as an FE and will be relocating to Midland after graduation. Any advice would be appreciated but I did have a few questions.
Is there an area of Midland that would appeal to a single guy?
Apartment or housing recommendations?

I've asked BH these things and didn't get an answer. I'm assuming they are waiting for the results of the drug test before they address this topic with me (if they do so at all)
BUT I'm trying to balance visiting family out of state and a wedding so any extra help would be great. Expected start date is some time in January(exact date TBD after drug test)

Thanks in advance for any possible help!

I grew up in midland and my family still lives there. Place is a boomtown right now. I'd suggest the further north and also northwest you are, the better part of town you're in. With a few exceptions of course. Housing will be very expensive but in regards to a certain area for a single guy etc...I don't know any specifics there but it's not that big of a town so I'd say no!

Midland is not the best place to be if you're single. If you grew up in the burbs/city you may even regret coming to Midland at first. However, you can easily make friends and pass the time here. There's a group called Young Professionals of Midland that I think one of the posters here is also a member of. Look them up. There's an Aggie get together for games too.

As for housing, there are a lot of new apartment complexes being built but they are more expensive (> $1300/mo for a 1 bedroom). Don't know many of the names though.

1) Start looking at apartments as soon as you can.

2) North and West of Downtown Midland is normally considered better with a few exceptions.

3) The $1000-1500 for a single bedroom apartment has been that way for a while.

4) I am an old married Ag '89, but the Young Professionals would be a good start. I am too old for them.

5) Start looking at apartments as soon as you can.

Start searching yesterday for an apartment.
You'll be paying $1,300+
Young Professionals of Midland is a good networking tool.
Draw a line due north along 349, draw a line west that more or less follows wall street. Look in the north west quadrant of where those lines meet.

(There are a couple of exceptions if you look for a house in beetenbough neighborhoods).

I would be even more specific. Stick with apartments outside the loop on north and northwest side. Midland A&M club is active and mostly younger Ags.
Like the others said, start looking soon!

I'm in a similar situation. Will be moving after graduation in May 2014.

My questions are about nice new apartments going up around midland. Does anyone know I'd they have websites or when specific ones will be done?

Also, should I make a trip to midland to search and sign? And will the ones being built have a leasing office already open? TIA

The newest currently open complexes off the top of my head are The Palms, Waterford Ranch, Blue Ridge.

Other nice apartments that should be open soon are Midway Station (behind Claydesta), Mesquite Terrace at Graceland Drive and Loop 250, Sunset Lodge (Odessa) at Faudree and Hwy 191, and the ones on Wadley Ave next to Buffalo Wild Wings. I think all of these will be opening within a month or two.

A couple other big complexes- The Vineyard on Holiday Hill Road across from Greentree C.C. and the Anatole on Briarwood across from the Palms- should both be ready by next summer or fall.

Some of the older complexes may be habitable and worth a look, but I would definitely stay north of Wadely.

I think that usually, the leasing office is the first building finished. They should be there to show you around and do pre-leasing while the rest of the complex is being completed.

What product line are you coming into?

I pay 1050/month at Aviare Place. Doesn't mean things haven't changed, price wise, in the last year. It's about the best I could do for an apartment outside the loop, on the better side of town.

Thanks y'all. I'm coming in as a PETE. I think I'm just gonna drive over there in January and try to get something solidified after visiting every place I can.

Any info y'all have on other new places opening before July or places I should take a look at please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for all the replies. Most of you were right about no availability. I ended up finding a place at Waterford Ranch that i think I will be very happy with.
As far as product line all I know is Wireline, more specific details to come.

If you are trying to save money, you don't have to live in one of the really nice, new appartments. Polo Park, Aviare Place, Wind Tree (I think that is what it is called) are all on the north side of the loop and well run complexes. They are not brand new and will tend to be a (little) less expensive.

There are also a number of good churches in the area which are a good way to meet folks. Good luck, I met my wife 6 months after moving here and we love it!

I live in Aviare Place. Wouldn't really call it well run. The place hasn't been updated since built. I've have a myriad of plumbing issues and it took maintenance over a week to respond to a leak...

It is "cheap" and on a great side of town.

Are there any 3 or 4 bedroom places for rent in Midland or Odessa? Looking for town home or condo but single-family home is good too. What kind of rents would I be looking at? Seems like it would be $2,000+.

This is for a family with 1 kid and plans for a second.

There is a job opportunity out there and trying to get a feel for the place and cost of living.

Waterford Ranch has 3 bedroom apts but I'm not sure on availability. They did say yesterday they have 11 2 bedroom apts for lease right now so maybe they have a couple 3 BRs as well.

As far as houses go, I'm sure there are some but it might be as difficult to find a good one as an apartment. I would expect to pay $2000+.

I'm looking for a place to live in Midland as well. Ags still recommend Waterford Ranch?

Also, if any other Ags are willing to do 2 bedroom, I would maybe be willing to get an apt to save a little on rent

Go to La Carreta when you get a chance. The Mexican food kicks ass in Midland.
