So I applied to a job in Midland. The employer called me and asked me to find a place first, before they could interview me. They mentioned the housing shortage and that for some it can take months to find a place. Could someone give me some pointers on finding a place? I've found a few places on Craigslist but I'm not sure if they are reliable.

You just need to plan a trip and come look. Get pre-qualified for a loan, find a realtor and schedule a weekend to look for houses. Be prepared to make an offer, houses are going quickly. I have a house for sale, been on the market for a week. It needs some updating, have it priced at $102/ft. Totally updated homes are going for $130/ft and up. You can find one, but you need to make the trip.

Andrabeth, you can't buy much under $200k in midland. Especially in a good neighborhood. I'm asking $265000 with a $10000 update allowance. Address is 2210 seaboard, 4 br, 2 bath, 2 living room, 2 car attached garage. Realtor is Kandi Bagwell with Keller Williams if he is interested.

It is crazy right now, I listed my house and it sold first day with 3 offers and one offer $4,000 above asking. I'm moving to greenwood but was able to see the house before it hit the market. My advice for someone coming in out of town would be to get a realtor and be ready to make a offer sight unseen.

Loudest Whoop - I am just a single guy looking for an apartment. I called up some places and they have some available. it seems a lot of the apartments have a bad rep. do you know anything about Avalon Springs apartments?

they scheduled my interview for now. If I do get the job I will update.

I have no personal experience with the apartments in Midland or anywhere since 1991.

Found this though: Apartment ratings

Avalon Springs
From 2009 mostly.

Hopefully some of the new Aggie Midlanders can chime in.

I don't know anything about most of the apartments in Midland any longer. It's been too long since I lived in one to give an accurate assessment. However I will offer the following link to crimes in the city of Midland. You can search for more serious crime (homicide, assault, etc) or vehicle theft and vandalism at any location in Midland. http://www.crimemapping.com/map/tx/midland

I lived in the Meridian Apts in 2011 before buying a house. I got out of the apts before the prices got inflated like they are. You pay a lot for not getting a lot. But that is apartment living overall (just having a place). I recommend staying on or around the loop. There are a few complexes that are more 'in town' but they are spaced out. The very nice places (blue ridge & the palms are newer and more expensive). Polo Park and Dakotas are older and a bit cheaper. I know some people at Waterfords and Colonade (?) and they all say the same thing...they pay too much but are lucky to have a place. I hope this helps some. I can answer more questions if needed.

There are several new apartment complexes being developed both on the west side of Midland and the east side of Odessa. About half of them are in early leaseup or preleasing mode. These are your best bet, as they have not had a chance to reach 100% occupancy yet.

The East Odessa projects are called:
The Missions
Lantana Gardens
Faudree Ranch
Sedona Ranch

You ought to be able to get anywhere in Midland from the east end of Odessa in about 15-20 minutes. I don't know the names of most of the western Midland projects but there are 3-4 coming out of the ground now. There is also one project being developed near the Claydesta HQ on N. A Street.

Every workday I drive from just East of the North-side Midland Wal-mart to 2nd and Grandview area in Odessa. It is a 30 minute drive in the morning and about 25-30 minutes at night. When some of the construction is done around here (I-20) I may be able to shave off a few minutes from that.

I did a few months ago...

My boss may be interested in renting out one of his spare bedrooms.

I'll post again tomorrow if this is still the case.
