I spent my school career traveling between Abilene and CS by taking the 36-53-485-6 route. I usually clocked in right around 4 hours. Now that we have moved back to College Station, I don't like the wife and kids taking that route when I'm not with them due to being on 53 and 485 alone.

Is there a better route that doesn't add too much time to the trip? Google and Mapquest offer I-20 to 6 and 83/84 to 6 routes.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

36 to 79 and across to Hearne.

36 all the way down and loop around Temple to Cameron and on to Caldwell and then 21 into the back door at BCS - I've done that once or twice

I think I would do about anything to avoid Hiway 6 between Hearne and Waco.......

but 6 from Waco to Eastland is not bad -

I'm in Abilene this weekend, so I'll have to experiment tomorrow on the way back.

6 is always a beating between Waco and Hearne. I can't stand it.

As previous poster said - 36 from Abilene all the way to Caldwell - Highway 21 left from there. There are the normal stops in the smaller towns, but I usually had cell reception most of the way through.

Yesterday, I took 20 to 6. I made it home in 4 hours flat, but was running about 80 the whole time (excluding normal slow downs in towns and behind slow drivers).

I always went to 36 south to Cameron. Take the cut across to Hearne - 6 and in to CS. With my family, I take Eastland - 6 all the way down. I send the wife down 6 with my kids. Cell service was always spotty on 36.

36 to Caldwell. Then do the random route on in from there.

There are two main reasons why I always took this route (Albany to CS):

1. Fast as you want to go on 485.

2. MAIN REASON: Green's Sausage House in Zabcikville.
