I'm having to travel to Alpine for a few days for work. I need a hotel to stay in (the typical Hilton and Marriott properties aren't available, obviously.)

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay in Alpine for a few days?

Holland Hotel

There's a brewery downstairs.

I was looking at that one. Holland and Maverick both looked pretty good. I also checked them out on the map, the thing that sucks is all hotels in Alpine sit right along the train tracks...

The Best Western/Alpine Classic Inn is on the north side of town and farthest from the tracks. It's a typical hotel, nothing fancy. As far as the train goes, it's like clock work, one every one to two hours. However, the Holland Hotel is still a great place.

I booked a room at the Holland. Didn't realize it was already almost Spring Break. Most of the rooms were already taken for the time I'll be there, but I'm looking forward to our stay.

I'll check those out.

I also plan on taking a trip out to Marfa to see what the hubub is.

FWIW, I believe the Holland Hotel supplies disposable earplugs in the nightstands, but you might want to go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy some heavy-duty comfort-fit ones if you are a light sleeper. The train never bothers me, but I also live 1/2 mile from train tracks and hear the train every night.

In Marfa, Maiya's, Pizza Foundation, and Squeeze are all pretty good places to eat depending on what kind of food you want and how formal or casual of a dining experience you want.

I would second the recommendation of Railroad Blues. They always seem to have good acts performing on the weekends. If there's a ballgame on, I always thought Kokernot was a cool little ball field.

The best thing you can do, though, is skip the main tourist attractions and visit all the little shops and galleries they have in the area in Fort Davis, Alpine, Marfa, and Marathon.

Oh, and if you are driving, be sure to bring some CDs, and iPod, or a satellite radio, because the only radio station you will pick up past Junction will be religious sermons. Also, be sure to not get too low on gas because the towns are several miles apart (i.e. Ozona to Fort Stockton is almost 100 miles). I've made the drive from Conroe to West Texas enough to know, but luckily didn't have to learn the hard way (except for listening to the sermon channel for 2 hours).

So far, so good. I'm enjoying my time in Alpine. Pretty cool little town.

Good to hear CDub. Try Alicia's for breakfast.
