Is it still best to take Hwy 87 up to Dumas and over to Clayton when heading to CO rather than the route west through Boys Ranch, Channing and Hartley?

Thanks!

If you're coming up 287, it's 6 of one and a half-dozen of the other.

Coming up from Canyon, I prefer the route through Channing because it's less busy, more scenic, and saves a few minutes. But to each their own.

Thanks, we've used the Channing route for years.

Reason I asked was last time we drove that way (5 years ago) there was a ton of truck traffic. Some of the folks trying to pass seemed to make some questionable decisions! Just wondered if maybe things were better.

From Boys Ranch to Channing is much improved over the last few years. Wide road, lots of passing zones

But Amarillo to Boys Ranch sucks. Or, t least it did the last time we tried it. So much development and resulting traffic that direction

Thanks! Hey, you've told me before but I lost my notes. Where's a good place to get a late lunch/early dinner in Canyon?

If it's not a Sunday or Monday, go to Green Chile Willy's on I-27 just south of McCormick in between Canyon and Amarillo.

I'm also a big, big fan of Tyler's BBQ in Amarillo. I haven't been to the BBQ place in Canyon now that's it has changed hands, but I've heard positive things.

Feldman's in Canyon is pretty good and is generally a neat place. My kids like it, too.

I went to Buff's in Canyon for lunch today after the kids' soccer games and was reminded how good it is. It's greasy, but great.

Corner Grille is just off VFW/Soncy and is good. It's only been open a few months and is close to where I live, so I feel like it should get a plug.

If you want lighter fare, Creek House Honey Farm is great. I'm not sure what their restaurant hours are, though. I almost never get over there as its on the other side of town. But it's good every time.

Sayakormarns (Thai) is always our favorite. Pepitos is great Mexican. Green Chile Willies (north of town) is best Chicken Fried. Texas Rose steakhouse and Feldmans are both good, just not our favorites. And plenty of fast food, we just got a Whataburger, but I think they are having a few opening issues.

Side issue: I assumed you were coming to Amarillo on 287 from Childress. If you are coming up I-27 from the south, there is a lot of construction on I-27 from Canyon to Amarillo.

If you're coming from Canyon, and trying to get to Dalhart, here's a suggestion:

West out of Canyon on highway 60 (some construction there)

About 3 miles west of town, straight west on FM1062 (highway 60 veers SW)

12 miles west on 1062 to the huge Azteca grain mill

Turn right (north) to FM 809

About 15 miles north on 809 to Wildorado

Left (west) on I-40. Pay attention to the stop signs as you cross access roads, and remember they are 2-way traffic. The on-ramp to I-40 is short, sharp turn, hard to see, short acceleration lane.

I-40 to Vega

North on 385 to Boys Ranch and Channing

We go this way a lot. About 20 miles of good FM roads, the rest good wide highways. Much less traffic and drama. Google maps says it it 1:41 and 109 miles.

North through Amarillo on 287 then west to Channing, 1:36 and 103 miles

To Amarillo via Boys Ranch Road, 1:32 and 93 miles

Good additions. We don't eat Buffs a lot, but yeah, steak fingers. And get a breakfast burrito for the next day.

We are on the east side of town. The honey place is always busy, it's kind of amazing. Good, light fare is correct.
