It's got to be a limestone layer because the other mesa has one, not as visible, at the same level.
It's the brainchild of the eccentric creator of the Cadillac Ranch. Pretty crazy to see driving by.

It's never seemed that real to me. It's always seemed obvious it was man made.
I know what you mean. I'd heard about growing up, but didn't know where it was until I randomly ran across it. I remember thinking "That's it?". It probably looks cool under the right conditions, but looks man-made pretty much any time I've driven by.
I'll accept that you and I knew it was fake before we saw it, so maybe we had some bias. But still....
The floating Mesa! On just the right kind of day, sky not bright blue (that board I'd actually a pale blue), it looks like the top of the Mesa is floating.
Actually the posted photo is about the best I've seen the effect look.
It is supposed to be viewed from the Amarillo Club, according to what someone told me.
Floating Mesa is more visible when you turn off Boys Ranch Rd. to the Bushland Rd. heading towards I-40.

Two people on this thread thought it might be limestone. In fact, one seemed quite certain. "It's got to be."
I have driven by it thousands of times. Stanley Marsh put it up to make it look like the Mesa was floating in the air. Has not looked like that to me yet!

The guy hired an artist to study the most common shade of the sky all year then painted it to make the "floating" Mesa. Rich dudes being weird. Same guy did Cadillac ranch, all of the weird road signs around Amarillo, and apparently had a thing for little boys.
To be accurate, his thing was for teenage boys. So not a pedophile, by definition.
