How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm trying to think of a trip for spring break with my son (he is 7) . . . how is PD Canyon at this time? Temperature? I think a day or two there and then head some where else. I posted on the travel board but someone suggested to stop by here too.

Any suggestions on tours or other things to do in that area? Sort of want to take it easy but am open to whatever . . . we will be driving from central Texas (Waco) so any stops along the way are helpful too. Thanks.

PD Canyon is beautiful anytime of year, in my opinion. March weather can be perfect, hot as heck, or blizzard conditions. So I don't have any advice for you there. Like I said, the Canyon is gorgeous and worth a trip out here.

I would also advise a visit to the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum located on WT's campus in Canyon. You can spend the entire day looking through all the exhibits. It's really an impressive museum.

The Discovery Center in Amarillo is supposed to be a really cool place to take kids (I've never been as I didn't have a reason to go) so you might look into that, too. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum has a good exhibit for kids, too.

As far as other stops on your way from Waco, you could hit Caprock Canyons State Park coming or going.

I'm not native to this area- I'm from TN but we've lived here 3.5 years and there is quite a bit to see.

If I think of more, I'll post. I'm sure CanyonAg will post and he really knows the area well.

Do you have any certain destination in mind? Or is this just a big road trip with Palo Duro Canyon at the apogee? Are you looking for hiking, biking, museums, anything? Do you want stuff in the Amarillo area, or suggestions between here and there?

Will try to add more later, but will echo post above. Mid-march can be heaven on earth up here. Or it can be (frozen) hell on earth. Just be prepared for most anything.

The Canyon moderates weather somewhat, so a cold, windy day on the plains could be pleasant in the Canyon.

Will also +1 the museum in Canyon. Old cars, cowboy stuff, disosaurs, lots of stuff a 7 year old would enjoy.

Off the top of my head, things to Google to do here and on the way:

PD Canyon
PPH Museun
Caprock Canyons State Park
CCSP trailway (old RR roadbed)
Hotel Turkey
Perini Ranch steak house in Buffalo Gap
Museum and pioneer village in Buffalo Gap
Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock
Silent Wings glider museum in Lubbock
Farm and Ranch Museum, Hale Center

Roads to travel:

Highway 207 between Silverton and Claude
Highway 256 between Silverton and Memphis, down north side of Caprock Canyons

Look for Charles Goodnight's House off 287 in the town of Goodnight. (Goodnight was the model for Woodrow Call in Lonseone Dove)

Slow down and take a look at the old buildings in Estielline. Speed trap there, so slow down anyway.

If you swing down toward Midland, go to the CAF (WWII planes) museum.

One of my favorites.

Though, Estelline to Turkey, turn on 70 to 256 to Silverton is even better.

Eat at Hotel Turkey. Good food from a chef trained in Houston.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We don't leave until early March so if you think of anything else post away.
