This friday I'm off work, and I want to take my youngest son fishing. All I'm looking for is a place to drown a few worms and get some crappie or bluegill. What are my options near amarillo? Growing up I always had some friends with stock tanks, so I'm kind of stuck as far as where to go. I'd like to keep the the driving down to a minimum.

I'm assuming you aren't looking for really good fishing. I understand there are some sort of fish in the creek/lake at the Medical Center (medi-park) And I know folks fish down here in Canyon at Southeast Park.

I was Googling for more information and found the link below with a lot of "community fishing lakes" Take a look there.

On second thought, if you can stand an 80 or 90 mile drive, go down to Caprock Canyons State Park. If the fishing in Lake Theo sucks, there's playground equipment next to the lake (if your son is small) and the whole State Park for hiking.

no, not looking to slay any big fis or anything, just want to spend a few hours with my son enjoying the outdoors. Lake theo is nice, if i can't find anything closer I'll give it a shot.

Caprock Canyons is one of my favorite places. I love Palo Duro, but CC has the same type of scenery and 1/10 the number of people.

I agree with the Caprock Canyons selection, especially if you don't have a boat. There are several other larger lakes in the area, Meredith, McKenise and Greenbelt, but you really need a boat to enjoy them and get to good fishing places.

With Caprock Canyons, you get the added drive time to spend with your kiddo and there are some nice trails in the area along with playground equipment if you get tired of fishing.

Speaking of fishing, it is free in the state park and when you check in at the HQ they'll loan you tackle if you don't already have any. You provide the bait. The Allsups in town usually has worms and canned corn.

Don't forget to fish the upper pond if you are not having any luck in Theo. Most people don't even venture up there and we've had some pretty good luck with it.

Have fun.
