Sounds like someone is a native.

I grew up at 2nd since Kindegarden and graduated from there...I've seen a lot. My wife, also a graduate and my HS sweetheart, and I opted to seek out another church once we were married, but I think that was more because we didn't want the mega-church atmosphere and having grown up there wanted to jump out of the nest, so to speak.

My father-in-law is also a security guard for 2nd (retired banker waiting for his pension) and he tells me all sorts of wonderful inside stories...unbelievable.

2nd is great at what they do by targeting kids (to bring the parents) and the single community, with very good Bible studies (although they can be cliquey as someone pointed out)...so it depends on what you want out of a church.

Funny blurb: I was buying a tape of a sermon once in the bookstore and I didn't have any cash...I asked the lady whom to make the check out to and she replied "Ed Young". I got a good laugh at that one.

Ed Young is a phenomenal speaker and businessman...that place has grown tremendously since I started there as a wee-boy.

Absoulutely false. The internet is such a safe place to throw out stuff that is untrue.

Yes, he goes to Hawaii every summer to relax, write books, and prepare sermons for the fall, but the place where he stays is not his. It is owned by a member of the church.

As for ths hostile takeover, that did not exist. The Southern Baptist Convention came to Second and asked for help for this Church as it was not doing well financially.

Family was golfing out there on Kaui and saw him there. After talking with others on the course they found it was a his vacation home...oh sorry.....pastor's retreat.

Either way, it sounds like a real nice place.

Again, it is not his home. It is owned by a member of the church.

Not sure I understand the problem of a preacher using a home that is offered to him by someone in his congregation.

Talk about drinking the Kool-Aid.

Wonder if any of his sermons covering moderation, humility, or self-sacrifice were written from the luxury of a multi-million dollar Hawaii home?

Gotta love God INC.

You are correct that it is in Kapalua on Maui. I wasn't saying wrong specifically to where it was, but that he owns it, because he does not own it.

As far as "moderation, humility, or self-sacrifice" Dr Young gave every dollar he had in savings towards the most recent capital campaign project that took place. I heard him speak on this more than once and spoke with him about it in a smaller setting. He and Jo Beth donate their entire bank account to the project and were left financially with their house in Houston and his retirement account (similar to 401k).

West campus member here since 2001.

I started going as a single and met my wife in one of the single's classes I was a part of back when a lot of the classes met at the Cinemark on the Grand Parkway.

I've never heard any Joel Osteen-isms come out of Dr. Young's mouth. Osteen seems more like a politically correct speaker rather than a pastor; Dr. Young holds no punches and has made himself VERY clear on matters such as teenage sexuality, homosexuality, divorce, etc.

I have been rather irritated with the church of late, however, but over nothing related to what Dr. Young preaches. It's the way that the change in Bible study classes was presented. Keith Carmichael came into my class and told us that we voted to change the class structure when we voted for the building campaign. You know, I'm an educated guy, and in all the literature the church handed out regarding the building campaign, I never saw anything that even suggested the class structure would be changing. Not once. He was disingenuous that morning with my former class, and that has left a bad taste in my mouth.

But like someone else said, SBC offers so much more that is positive for my family.

And no, Dr. Young does not own that property in Hawaii.

How does everyone know about that place out there?

Well, when I first heard about him being out there, I didn't know who he was until I saw his face on a billboard.

Can't speak for everyone else, but it's common knowledge around the West campus that Dr. Young spends most of the summer in Hawaii after the early June Beach Retreats are done.

AgsWin: are you absolutely certain that the SBC went to Second and asked them to bail Forest Cove out? I have never heard of the SBC asking any church to bail another out of a financial mess. Forest Cove had some financial problems, but they were not as extreme as most of the congregation beleived. What I do know is that Ed Young specifically targeted Forest Cove as an opportunity to expand Second into another growing area of Houston. There was no merger...it was a takeover. Everything about Forest Cove became Second Baptist. Every member automatically became a member of Second. Every staff member now worked and got their paycheck from Second. Every program that was unique to Forest Cove was thrown out and replaced by one from Second. If that is not a takeover, then I don't know what is.

Yes I'm positive. I've been a Deacon at SBC for a number of years and meet with Dr Young once a month and have heard him speak of the North campus many times when it all happened.

I can't speak from personlay experience of seeing Forest Cove's programs and such being thrown out the window and replaced by SBCs, but I do hear all the time that the North Campus does things differently than the rest of SBC, so I would assume they held on to a lot.

I've been going to Second since '99.

Met my wife there.

We go when I'm not training for a bike ride or just too lazy the day after an A&M game.

It is common knowledge that Dr. Young takes a sabbatical every year. Yes, it is in Hawaii, but we have a church member that allows him access.

Think about it, he is the leader of one of the largest Baptist churches in America. He is on the job 24/7 pretty much. This is his time to get away and relax. Everyone needs a vacation.

How many of you would pass up a chance to go to Hawaii every year if you had a free place to stay? With the right plane ticket, it could be a pretty cheap trip.

Now, where is it written that there is a limitation on a pastor's salary? I get sick of hearing this crap. Too many of you think a church pastor should be destitute of any assets. Again, just like the CEO of a large company, he is the CEO of a large church. His salary will be compensated as such.

His house has gone up in value to where it is now. He did not buy it at $1 million plus.

Measure his salary based upon congregation size and I'll bet it is not far from other pastors.

I have my issues with Second. There is no doubt. I was one of the few that was publicly forced to stand up in the congregation and vote "NO" to the latest expansion. I didn't like some of the things in it. I also don't like where they spend some of their money, but the benefits my wife and myself have gained from that church have outweighed the downsides.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT CHURCH, and many of you need to start looking at churches this way. They are run by people who are fallible.

Now, Joel Osteen, that is a whole other subject. The guy is a con artist and will get his in the end.

Um....considering the saint your church is named after lived an austere life as a hermit, the idea of your pastor going to one of the most exclusive spots in the country to 'relax' is ironic at best.

Why does he need to go to a PGA tour golf course to 'relax' or contemplate his role as a minister? Why do people accept such hypocrisy?

Gotta love GOD Inc.

Wow! I'm rich!!!!!!!!!!! Guess I can retire now.

SBC is not perfect, as one of the above posters said. Dr. Young often makes a statement of same, saying that if you're looking for a perfect church by coming to Second, then you're in the wrong place.

I don't begrudge Dr. Young his vacation time - the Hawaii location is offered and he accepts it. Who here would turn that down?

I also don't like everything the church does. Yes, they spend a lot of money, and I suppose by and large it's a good thing. I didn't like the way the new construction was handled. I also hate how they like to do this church-wide thing on Christmas Eve or Easter at the freaking Toyota Center or Minute Maid Park.

I live in Katy. The last thing I want to do on Christmas Eve is drive to downtown Houston to contend with traffic and parking. That's just not going to happen.
