Has anyone gone to school there? How hard is it to get your child in there?

It is a bit down the road (he is 7-moths old), but we understand there can be a long waiting list for a school of this caliber.

I did 13 years there as did both my brothers. I don't think it was better for any of us than a public school. Looking back, I wish the parents did something else with their money. That could have been a big chunk of change.

On the plus side:
If you want to pay for private college also, your kids will have an easier time getting in.
Your kids can be starters in any sport; Top notch in liberal arts; Small classes and great teachers.

As far as getting in, I'm sure it would just be a matter of finding the right preschool according to Kinkaid.

Every September there is an open house for all private schools in Houston. There was one a couple of weeks ago at the JWMarriott on Westheimer.

About 100 schools (I'm guessing) send representatives there to tell you how great their schools are. You can find out all sorts of info about all sorts of local private schools.

Some of the schools require testing & interviewing the kids (even young ones). I do know that the ol' boy network still applies as we have some friends who have told us no problem if we ever want to send our kids to XX school (not Kincaid, but you get the idea) since they're well-connected there.

We have some friends sending their 6th grade daughter to St. John's for a cool $16K/year, then they have to buy supplies!

Some of the schools can be cheaper.

I've heard that the legacy issue is high at Kincaid, so open spots to the general public are limited. Just word of mouth/rumor, though.

Again... thanks for all the help. Any recomendations on other schools? I heard St. Thomas Episcopal is another good school. We are new to Houston... so any help is appreciated.

St. Francis Episcopal is very close to Kincaid...only goes through 8th grade though. Supposed to be one of the better ones in the area.

St. Thomas Episcopal is located in Meyerland. We have friends whose kids go there. It is very strict, and supposedly very good academically. If you kid want to be in the best youth bagpipe band in the world, it's the place to be!

I attended Second Babtist untill 8th grade. Kinkaid was are rival school and is right down the road. Second Babtist starts at Pre K so its not that hard to get into if you start young.

If you want to look even futher down the road Memorial high school is one of the best public schools around and is basically like a private school. So the public school system in your area isnt that bad either.

St Johns School is the best coed school in Texas.

Avg SAT score for seniors at Highland Park HS in Dallas is 1190. How do the private Houston schools compare? Plano West was 1160 last year.

The legacy deal is big at Kinkaid. Not as big as it used to be.

GWB went to ninth grade at Kinkaid.

GWB was way before my time. However his pop spoke at my graduation when VP and his mom and pop were made Honorary Distinguished Alumni last year, when Kinkaid turned one hundred years old.

There's another plus I forgot to mention. You get fancy alumni magazines and asked for money, every year, forever.

SeanDe22: How could you attend Second BaPtist and not know how to spell the name of your school?

Good question.

You get that house finished yet, Buck?

I would also take a look at First Baptist Academy which has a different feel than Kincaid. I attended there in the 80's when it was Northwest Academy. I have a buddy that graduated from Kincaid in 87 or so and appreciated the opportunity his parents gave him but probably won't send his kids there.

Kincaid, 2nd best private school in Houston.
The best is St. John's School.

St. Johns is the best private school in the city. Then Episcopal, as the poster above me said.

Memorial is one of the best (if not the best) public schools in the city though

Ducks4Brkfast - House is finished and we've moved in. The reason I have so many opinions on these school threads (besides my own experiences growing up here) is because I've been researching schools as part of our house buying decision. We're not zoned for great public schools, but there is a very good K-8 private school that sends a bus to our neighborhood. It was recommended to us by the folks at Kincaid. Now we just have to actually have kids! Nothing like advance planning.

Kids? What's this talk about kids? You have another wife that I don't know about?

We researched schools as part of our house buying decision. Not necessarily because school-aged kids will be entering the picture anytime soon, but for re-sale value as well.

Yall just built, so are looking to stay-put longer term, I'm sure. If we have a kid today (or nine months from now) school won't be an issue for about 5 years.

save your money, and let your kid go to memorial. it is the best pub school in the city. there is no use paying for private schools in that area unless you are zoned to a spring woods or a northbrook or something.

There are THREE premiere schools in Houston and I spent time at two of them. Although Kinkade and St Johns are good schools, River Oaks Baptist is by far your best option. The first two are larger and more impersonal. ROBS is still reasonably small and full of caring young families. It is definitely worth a visit-

Another option:
If moving isn't out of the question, West University has the best public elementary/middle school. Again, young caring families and it's situated in a very nice, young neighborhood.

I heard that the West U middle school can be kind of sketchy. Not true? West U Elem. is quite good and maybe better academically than ROBS but ROBS has the Christian influence going for it. Neither St Johns or Kinkaid spend much time on religious grounding, do they?

I went to Annunciation Orthodox School (AOS) from preschool until 8th grade. It's a good school, but I'm very happy I went to a public high school (Lamar). Being at private school too long can keep your kids too sheltered.

I've heard good thigs about river oaks baptist as well, but it is only K-8 and costs about 15K once you get to middle school.

That's about lot value in most of West U (unless you're talking about a townhouse)
Towns03

No, west u is not sketchy. Also, ROBS is as good or better than SJS and Kinkaid academically. Whoever told you all that is grossly misinformed. Those may be the most ridiculous comments i've read since i signed up on texags. Unfortunately, the price tag is considerable at those private schools. You can expect to pay 10 to 15k a year by the time they hit middle school. If that isn't in your budget west u is your next best option.

you got me, dig! back to the topic at hand- your best bet (again, only if moving isn't out of the question) is to pick up an older home just south of westpark and east of weslayan. Would be a great investment and you'll be zoned to west u's schools.

you do realize a teardown in that area costs over 300K? That's probably not the perfect area for a young couple a few years out of school.
