It's that time of year again. Places 5, 6, and 7, are up this cycle.
Place 5 candidates: Diana Martinez Alexander and Jennifer Hyland
If you have followed any local politics in the past few years, you might have heard of Alexander. She has run for various offices over the last few cycles, the last time being against Wesley Hunt. Her own website describes her as a "passionate educator, activist, organizer and voice for my community." She is a certifiably insane person and belongs nowhere near elected office; certainly not a school board.
I have no idea who Jennifer Hyland is. EDIT: Hyland's Facebook page indicates she is a republican who supported John Perez in his state house run, posts scripture, and send her kids to Pine Cove.
Place 6 candidates: J. Steven Smelley, David Enrique Lopez, and Walker Agnew.
Walker Agnew is a Wilchester Elementary dad who lives in Wilchester West and is a nat gas scheduler with Kinder Morgan. He grew up in SBISD, went to Stratford, and has young kids in the district. He is a great guy and would make an awesome board member.
Lopez ran last cycle and was soundly defeated. His LinkedIn profile lists him as a "dedicated educator, community advocate, and civic engagement leader," and comes complete with his pronouns (He/Him). Again, another person that should be nowhere near a school board. Here is a video of Lopez and Alexander (noted above) showing off their nut-job-ness:
I have no information on Smelley.
Place 7 candidates: Juan Jose Reyes, Patricia Cabrera, and Caroline H. Bennett
Bennett is the incumbent and was first elected to the board in 2022 in the conservative wave that swept that cycle. Overall, I have heard positive things about her.
Patricia Cabrera is endorsed by the woman (Virginia Elizondo) who is suing SBISD on the insane basis that the current at-large election system violates the Voting Rights Act. Cabrera's Facebook page notes her support for Beto, Planned Parenthood, AOC, DEI, and Hillary Clinton, among others. Not great, Bob.
I have no information on Reyes.
Election day is Saturday May 3rd. If you don't want crazy people running the SBISD board, please tell your neighbors and get involved.
