2014 Tahoe with check engine light. I think it is the engine temp sensor, but looking for an honest mechanic and appreciate any recommendations.

Where are you located? If in the Katy area, auto techtronics is the best. In the Humble area Beckwiths Auto Care. In northwest Houston, Skeeters is good. Several good shops around just need the area where you live.

Go to any parts store and have them hook up a code reader to tell you what is causing the check engine light. That's the first thing a mechanic is going to do.

Fixers on 11th is great. Be prepared because you will more than likely get sucked into a political/conspiracy conversation, but good honest service.

Had many good experiences at J&T auto on westview @ Campbell.

They have gone through an ownership change, haven't dealt with them in a while.

Toy Tech Auto in Tomball on 2920...Great people and extremely knowledgeable and trustworthy.

It's a long drive for you but you said you don't mind driving. I drive out there from Spring Branch to take our vehicles and it's worth it. Hell they've even driven me home and picked me up.

Obviously the first thing, but the code only tells you what illuminated the CEL. It doesn't necessarily tell you what caused it. You can get lucky with swapping parts, but it takes more than pulling the code to properly diagnose the problem.

Buy one yourself to have on hand. With 4 vehicles in my family we can usually diagnose problems ourselves, and decide whether to do the work or take to our mechanic to handle. We at least can walk in there and tell them fairly accurately what the problem is that needs to be checked out and fixed.
