Think Lina will embrace a new concept, throw the weight of her enormous bulwarks behind it and become the hero Houston Astrodome enthusiast really need?

I'm hoping for a exclusive hotel & event center extravaganza that only those native born to this great hydrocarbon-soaked soil can frequent, which would include women dancers in Derick Dolls outfits, kegs and kegs of Dome Foam and Dave Ward guarding the door. Maybe a Destruction Derby every Saturday.

Is it still full of asbestos or has our 30 million in tax dollars over the last 15 years gotten rid of all the asbestos?

I think Harris County voters voted overwhelmingly to tear down the dome about 10 years ago.

Does this group have any actual authority or just "well intentioned"?

Think it's mostly the latter. It's a non-profit advocacy group, but I'm not sure they have the formal relationship that a park conservancy typically has in managing or developing a property. The dome is Harris County property, so Commissioners Court would have to agree to any new ideas.

So this is a big circle jerk about a nothingburger. Got it.

My prediction, in about 10 years, that will be where the Astros play, in a new stadium.

I hope not.

I think MMP is aging very well and love the Downtown location. So much easier to attend games than an NRG location.

I agree with you, but that property is worth a lot of money, and the impending 59 expansion may force a sale sooner than desired.

The Astros ownership is putting in a lot of money towards developing the area around MMP. I doubt they will want to abandon that area any time soon. Also, all of the 59 expansion will be to the other side of the freeway.

That's interesting, I'm sure that it is all in partnership with the Harris County Sports Authority. Right? HCSA owns MMP, but do they, or Harris County own the dome?

HCSA is Harris County.

HCSA owns all of the stadiums and arenas (including the dome) in town that aren't college venues.

Technically it was a vote against the bond that would have financed the renovations for it. A no vote did not mean it would be torn down although many viewed it that way.

From the article:
Quote:

He subsequently told Houston Public Media the plan is to construct a 17-story, 300-room hotel that is connected to 60,000 square feet of retail and dining space, along with a three-story gathering space where Houstonians and visitors can watch Astros games and other major sporting events on a big screen to be hung on the outside of the ballpark.
Genius! Get taxpayers to buy an enormous jumbotron, then block the view with a building so that only your guests can benefit from it.

It's been almost 20 years since it last held an event. The people attached to it are all older at this point. I think it's doomed and will ultimately be demolished, the question is when?

That would be a huge step backwards as far as location. We are still being screwed by Roy Hofhienz decision to put the Dome so far outside downtown and the HCSA deciding that NRG should be in the Dome's parking lot. There is just nothing of interest around that complex.

What's wrong with MMP - not enough parking revenue?

I know you were. I didn't know if the Astros were grumbling about not sucking the public quite dry enough.
