Not fully of course, but it would reduce the need for campuses. Could close down the old ones and keep the newer ones.

Not all bond proposals are bad Waller ISD has one for $700+ million to build 2 new elementary schools, a new junior high, and a new HS because the district is expected to triple in enrollment in the next 10 years.

You think $175MM for a school is reasonable?

I don't know what else is in the bond, the schools are just the top big-ticket items. And it's not so much what is reasonable it's simply what construction costs are these days along with the infrastructure to support them.

Between land and construction costs the bare minimum for an elementary is going to be $30MM and a junior high closer to $75MM while a HS will be over $100MM.

Waller ISD is already busting at the seams with 8000 students and inside 10 years will be at 28,000. There are 2 deals (one already clearing ground) there's 10,000+ new homes in Waller ISD that will be put up off 1488 between Fields Store and 1774. And this doesn't include everything going on south of 290.

It would seem like knowing what all was in the bond proposal would be a prerequisite for deciding if it was good or not.

And even if you double the numbers from 10 years ago, your "minimum" numbers are not correct. Sure, districts spend those kinds of numbers all the time. Doesn't make them reasonable or "simply what construction costs".

Vouchers would never replace public schools. The population is still going to require new construction and upgrades.

The differences from campus to campus in HISD are pretty wild, even at the elementary level.
Don't try to explain logic to people that will fight tooth and nail to prop up what is clearly a failed system and who want nothing more than to extend and expand the government controlled monopoly on education.

In today's market, $30MM will get you a very small and very basic building with minimal rooms.

Construction is stupid right now. Materials are still high as giraffe poon, labor costs are stupid and none of it looks like it will go down ever again.

$175MM for a medium sized school is in the ballpark.

For anyone on the fence, Dora came out in support of the bond.

There is a ton of Shady practices that go on with new school construction and bonds. From architects whom have business units to help pass the bonds, developer's whom have "connections" and the GC's whom specialize in education buildings.

All this adds up to overpriced buildings.

She's only supporting so that people aren't confused about her HCFCD tax election. Her coming out against HISD Prop A would have trickle down effects for people voting against HCFCD Prop A.

I tried voting at the HCC at 610/59 yesterday and there was easily an hour or more wait. Was just slammed.

Voting on Tuesday and hoping everybody voted early so it's easy.

Voted yesterday at the Lone Star College off the BW & W. Lake Houston. It was busy but literally walked right in, gave them my ID to get my ballot, and went straight to a machine with zero issues. It took longer to click through all the races than it did to give them my ID and get my ballot.

I should have posted this a week ago, but you can heck early voting daily totals to see which locations are busiest:

Still a useful link if anyone is curious about Early Voting turnout numbers.

Delmar Stadium has no working lights for night games since the hurricane - canceled a game there yesterday and they had to ship everyone to butler

No athletic facility upgrades in this bond as all their stadiums are nearly 60 years old and no real upgrades ever except turf and a scoreboard they don't really know how to use

Delmar has been F'ed since it took a direct hit from a tornado during the derecho. The follow up storms didn't do it any favors.

I don't any cares about $2,000,000 for new lights or spending an equal amount to get lead pipe out of schools, but need to account for things like that and not just lump into a multi billion dollar bond. way too much corruption in HISD to give them freedom with that much money when they have been under investigation for accounting multiple times in last few years.

You can say that, but in the end it all just amounts for HISD to continuing to spiral on your dime.

The same people who say this now were all for the state taking it over. And yet will always find a way to continue to block the very group they demanded fix the situation. And somehow will be shocked when things continue to get worse.

If you're voting on the same side of the teacher unions, you might want to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Because if they don't get funding to fix the situation than it will have to come from elsewhere. And my guess is the G&T and magnet programs.

GT and Magnet money is not going to be used to fund football lights and lead pipe removal. Those are 2 different budgets and the bond money cannot cross to academics. But don't expect me to blanket spend my money on a blank check.

I went the Hogg vs Hamilton junior high football game last week, which was in the hood outside of 610 near Gulfgate. I don't expect them to play at Delmar but Dyer Field right next door would have been fine.

It hosted the powerhouses of Crosby vs St Thomas a few times back in my day.

Because HISD came in over budget and years behind schedule on the last one.

My wife worked in HISD back when the construction paid for by that bond was taking place. I'm not going to say HISD is anything resembling a well-run organization, but their last bond was approved right as a huge boom in construction started citywide. The estimates they had for materials and labor wound up being way off by the time construction actually started.

Dyer Stadium, AKA "The Antbed"

Back in my sports producer days, before Twitter and instantaneous internet score updates, when we had to work the phones and call press boxes to get scores for high school football games on Friday nights, trying to get scores out of Barnett was difficult... as they had NO PHONE in the press box. You had to hope a security guy might answer the parking lot pay phone we had the number for... and that he was sober enough to be able to read the scoreboard from outside the stadium.

ISD with a $2B+ annual budget at the time, and they couldn't splurge for a phone in the press box.

Yep, that's the stadium the game was at, Barnett Sr. The nachos were good and concessions cheap, though I think the lady might have just pocketed the cash.

They did not have design for any of the projects at the time the bond passed. By the time the design came in well behind schedule then they put it out for bid and yes, costs were higher. Most districts will allot money at the end of a bond for the design of the next one, so when Katy comes out with a bond they already have the drawings to issue for construction, or at least a basis for design. HISD was literally asking sitting principals what they wanted to see in their school AFTER the bond was passed. When a new principal came in the next year they changed the design for what the new principal wanted. That is not how this works.
