Kid just had a game in Galena Park tonight. Super quaint little area with classy roundabouts. Highly recommended.

There are tons of great neighborhoods in Houston proper.

But dang the roads are bad. Nothing like a $3 million house sitting on a street with potholes worse than Fallujah.

My mom grew up in Brazoria County, and several of my friends moved to downtown Houston or Rice Village before family formation.

You shouldn't live in Houston.

Huge tax increase coming, crime is horrible, poor roads EVERYWHERE.

But, since you're not buying a home, $1300 could get you a place outside the Loop east of town, or west depending on size.

My daughter, who has moved back to take a job w/3M, is likely moving back to a place off Post Oak/I-10 in that range. South of 10.

Good luck.

Cheap ass 4plex or garage apt in North Montrose, right near Whole Foods. Right by Buff Bayou park, downtown, Heights, Midtown, and Montrose. Then save your money you're saving on rent. Can't lose.

I have one of those right now, from Lake Jackson to City Center. (And I grew up in Lake Jackson, but would not want to make that drive every time I needed to be in the office)

My brother-in-law worked at the hospital on Rock Prairie in College Station and worked with a guy who commuted from Conroe. I guess it was a reverse commute?

I would look at Woodforest. They have multiple floor plans that are below your budget.

When I was at Beltway and Clay, there was one guy who commuted from Navasota daily and another guy who commuted from Lake Jackson daily. It made me feel much better about my commute.

10 years ago it wouldn't have been terrible. Not ideal, but not terrible.

But then 288 got absolutely FUBAR'd like every other highway in Houston and we will never live to see the end of construction. So it would absolutely suck these days.

Probably takes the same amount of time to get about two miles in Mumbai.

Right after I graduated from A&M, I worked in Clute. Lived in Lake Jackson for a year and a half, then we moved to Sugar Land.

I commuted every day. 50 miles one way.

Back then, neither Highway 6 nor 288 had much traffic. I could drive 288 and not see another car for miles. So it wasn't stressful; just boring.

Used to stop at the original Buc-ees on my way out of town and buy beer for the drive home.

I made that drive for two and a half years. Got a job in the medical center with offsite parking and it took me ... about an hour to get to and from work. LOL

That and the toll road construction. And the fact that people are stupid and can't drive and the cops do nothing about them.
Cinco Ranch Aggie

That drive up 288 from Lake Jackson used to be non-eventful, or to quote the above poster, boring. Pearland was a small town that at the time did not even reach 288; there was more concern about the ******** cops in Iowa Colony driving right up on your ass hoping to get you to speed up to 56 so they could nail you.

Now that section of 288 from right about the Beltway to several miles south is Pearland. Idiots who don't know how to properly merge. Traffic nightmares. Retail as far as the eye can see. In other words, Houston.

I still have family down there, but now that my uncle dentist has retired, I have very little reason to make that drive any more. I'll miss going down there from time to time, but glad I don't have to make that commute.

Those Iowa Colony cops and the scandal were a pain. Went in and out of the city limits 3 times on 288, and they had an insane amount of cops for a town that had about ~1000 people. Eventually the Texas Rangers investigated and disbanded their police force. Not sure when it came back, but it's been several years ago now.

I think my brother or a buddy of his got a ticket there for doing 57 in a 55.

OP, if I were you at 23 years old I would live in midtown. The 19th st area bars tend to lean just a little older, mid to late 20's. A lot of the fresh out of college grads in their early 20's still live in Midtown IMO. Go to Little Woodrows midtown on a CFB Saturday and you'll see what I mean.

MAA Midtown Square has 1 bedrooms for around $1300, and its within walking distance to all the bars. You will meet lots of girls your age there in the apartment pool or gym. Theres other apartments in the area with similar price points.

This isn't a question. I'm assuming you are a dude. The answer is to live in The Heights, probably something in northern Heights area near the bars on 19th and 20th. You aren't going to an office, so you need to be around people in your age range. Find an apartment, make some friends, join a fitness club, then next year get a town house with 2-3 other guys and live it up.

These are the years where you make money and have no responsibility other than your job. Watching the sunrise over a body of water is great when you have someone do enjoy it with. You are young. Live it up.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations, I'm thankful for being able to get everyone's advice on this.

I was seconds away from quitting my job and moving to El Paso, but then I found a great garage apartment right in the heart of the Heights. I look forward to being there soon, thank y'all again!
