Where Should I Live In Houston?

Howdy everyone, I am a '23 grad that will be moving to Houston for work in December. I am currently training for my job in sales, and won't have an office that I will need to go into in the Houston area. I will have customers all over the bottom half of Texas to visit as well as the southern half of Louisiana. There will be some weeks where I am on the road traveling, but Houston is the best city for me to be in because it is basically in the middle of my territory.

With that being said, I have the freedom to live anywhere in Houston that I want to, which is nice but it also makes it a lot harder to figure out where I should live. The Heights are very appealing due to the younger crowd, restaurants, bars, etc. however the prices seem especially outrageous in this area, and every apartment complex seems to have serious issues with car break ins and other crime.

Are there any areas or apartments that y'all would recommend to me? The woodlands seems like a great place, although it's farther away, it still seems like a place that younger professionals may want to live in. I would like to keep my monthly rent to 1.3k or below, but I know that paying more for a good living situation could be worth it.

If any of you have any recommendations, please let me know! And if you or anyone you know has a room/ garage apartment open for rent then don't hesitate to reach out about that either. I'm open to checking out any area that y'all would recommend!

Clear Lake is a great place to live, especially on the Galveston County side. Good bars and restaurants, safe, clean, and fishing, boats and bikinis abound. Rents not cheap but you can find some decent deals. See Summerbrooke in Kemah.

Baytown and Mount Belvieu are where its at right now. The Baytown mall was torn down a couple years ago and a new BYT Sodosopa is being built there.

Assuming things here but a few thoughts.

As a new grad, young, no baggage (kids, etc.) Woodlands nor Clear Lake would be on the top of my lists. Great places but not for a young dude/chick chasing a living and tail. I'm guessing you would like to be around other young professionals living a similar lifestyle.

Heights and surrounding area is probably ground zero. Do a little homework as the hood ain't far. I10 run near City Centre might be another option. I wouldn't do it but downtown or midtown might fit as well.

I'm way too old to know where the cool kids hang but unless you are chasing cougars (no issues with this at all) I think you will be better positioned closer to the city hub.

Enjoy it... life comes at you fast. Save as much as you can now and thank me in 25-30 years!

I like to live near the water, so I would recommend Channelview or North Shore. Very nice and central. Two other area to consider are Sunnyside and, if you like a bigger lot, Acres Homes. Enjoy your time here but remember that El Paso is always there for you.

I appreciate it. I am a young guy with no baggage who's looking to enjoy being around a good dating and social scene, so the main city hub probably is where I would be happiest. It'll be harder to find a price-friendly option, but I'll probably look for people renting rooms out in a nice townhome and do my research on any potential roommates.

Everyone has been giving me good suggestions, and places like clear lake do seem really nice. However, practically all my friends moved to DFW and Austin after graduation, so I don't want to live somewhere where it'll be harder to fall in with the younger crowd. Not against cougars at all though.

I hope that everyone keeps giving suggestions though! I'm originally from south of SA so I'm not familiar with Houston and can use all the help I can get on this.

Lmao I will most definitely be living in the middle of nowhere in south or west Texas later in life. Houston is a necessary evil at this point in my life. But I know that there is a ton of fun to be had here as well so I'm trying to make the best of the next several years

Drive around the Heights in this specific area bounded by Heights Blvd on the West. 20th on the North. Main on the East and I10 on the south. Drive up and down the streets looking for lease signs. Get a garage apartment. You will find cheaper rent. A great place to run. And you will be very close to everything.

And I do mean go up and down the streets. Many of these older folks that have garage apartments do not put them online.

Young and single - Montrose, Midtown, Washington.

Alternatively, I know a guy who will rent you a room for $300/mo near Gulfgate. Still close to town, but on the dangerous side.

There's a lot of garage apartments in the heights that can meet your price range. Recommend finding some online and driving thru the area. There is a bike trail through the heights you can walk down as well. Just north of the heights is Oak Forest which might work as well

Great advice, thank you. I've seen some of the garage apartments on online but I never thought about how there could be some out there that aren't listed online. I'll spend this weekend looking around the area

owners won't want to advertise online, too many phone calls etc. If you drive around to look in person, dress and behave decently. Landlord might tell you it's already rented or quote a jacked-up price if you look like someone they don't want living above their garage.

3rd Ward, near UH and TX Southern. Be a gentrification pioneer.

Practically and forward thinking, buy a duplex ASAP, somewhere. Rent out the other side and let someone else pay your housing costs. Great way to get an early start on building wealth. Much easier to do it now as a single.

There are some nice complexes in the West U area ... but not sure if you can find a one-bedroom for less than around $1,500.

Still, it's close to lots of good stuff without all the hassles of street parking, etc., in the Heights.

Driving around the heights looking for For Rent signs is excellent advice. I've been lucky with Craigslist finding some houses to rent in the past in Woodland Heights and Timbergrove, but it's true that a lot of owners simply don't advertise online.

If you'd rather go with an apartment, there are some smaller, older complexes around TC Jester/18th that would be more in your price range. Less updated, probably a lot more families, but the price is right and in a great location.

There are small older apartments all over The Heights that have been renovated but no clue what rent is going for. You won't have a nice pool & workout room but probably quieter & cheaper.

I know there are med students that rent garage apartments in the West U, Rice University, Southampton, Meyerland area.

Signs advertising them for rent is something I have not seen much of so it's either word of mouth or you could call the Rice student housing office and see if they have any resources for off campus housing.

You could also call the t.u. medical school and see if they have housing resources.

This is the answer. I live a few blocks away from that strip and it is full of tail Thursday through Saturday nights. You can get to Midtown or Downtown with an easy Uber. Rent at $1300/mo cap will be difficult unless you rent an unrenovated garage or small 2/1 house. There are some new apartments going up that may have great just opening/one year deals in the area.

I'm from Dallas but moved to Houston after graduating. If you are a young single male professional, I would not live anywhere outside the Loop.

For $1,300 a month, it depends what you are looking for. I highly recommend one of the following:
  • If you want to live by yourself, do what chico said. Drive around the heights and look for signs for rentals. I have NEVER rented from an apartment or management company since I moved to Houston back in 2013. I have always rented directly from owners and have always had the best experience and prices when doing so. Direct owners would love to rent to a young A&M graduate with a good job.
  • For only $1,300, you are probably looking at a 1BR or efficiency between 500-750 sqft. Not a big deal if you really want to live alone. I'd rather live in a 500sqft efficiency in the heights than live in a 1,100 sqft apartment in Clearlake.
  • I highly recommend considering getting a roommate or 2. If most of your friends got jobs in other cities, and you are looking to be social and date, living with other single young professionals is not something you should disregard. If you found some roommates, yall could afford a really cool 3-4BR home rental. You would have others to be social with. I'm sure you could find some other recent Aggie grads looking to room in Houston. That kind of lifestyle is very similar to being in college, but now you actually have money in your pocket. Makes your 20's a very fun time.

ETA: when I say inner loop, I'd stay north of I59 and west of I45. Crime is not a big deal in those areas, though I would always look for a place with a garage if at all possible. Most crime you will experience is a shattered window. East downtown is still developing and is a bit of a food desert, though I believe it's better than it was 5 years ago, when I was looking to buy a home.

That last bit is the only answer. Ppl saying midtown/Washington is living in 2012. Easily could get popped being a young cracka tryna hit da club in those parts now.

Groves at white oak prob good value. There are some cool super older vintage apartments in the heights that could work and are clean or as others have said garage apartment.

If 1300 cap wasn't there, prob live in heights waterworks/ellison area or just bite the bullet and go in the new alliance deal on 20th bc it's right there.

This is for right out of school and looking at 5 or so years of young professional tail chasing.

I'd probably find a place in Spring Branch near Beltway 8/I-10 if in your shoes. You'll save significant $$$ and you are still plenty close into town imo. Plus, there's a Kirby Ice House there and other nice bars and eateries poppin up.

Whatever you do, just stay the hell out of Midtown.
