Work for a small company. Told from Sunday to work from home if we can, if not just let management know if you need any help with your house or situation. Boss had some extra generators he brought over to some employees that requested. Got email Wed that we will all have a little extra in the coming paycheck to help with unexpected expenses. Office still out of power. One of management is asking if he can deliver any needed goods (food, ice) to employees that need them.
This is how you do it.

Friday - prepare to work from home, if you feel safe coming in Monday do so
Monday @ 6:00AM - work from home
Monday @ 7:30AM - lose all ability to communicate and network down, hot spot won't work
Monday @ 8:30AM - large tree uproots in my front yard - so yeah didn't check in or have ability to check in until after 5:00PM, told my boss couldn't do anything and was outside all day cutting tree - he completely understood
Tuesday thru today - had power at office and went to work since no power at home

Monday was my scheduled day for working from home. Logged in to work by 6:30am. Worked until power went out at 9:00am. Vacation was charged for the difference to get 8 hours. Tuesday, I found internet and logged in 8 hours so I didn't have to use vacation. Wednesday, I looked into the internet and got permission to work a few hours overtime to make up for Monday's vacation time. Thursday, back in the office. Friday back in the office… It is in the Employee Manual that if you can not come into work, including loss of power/internet, you will be charged vacation/comp time for hours to get to 8 work hours.

It seems the issue is working a job that bills time.

What the hell kind of work are y'all doing to have such terrible company policies? I'd have to be paid an obscene amount of money to deal with that. Like 7-figures annually.

I work for a small family owned company. Very chill and completely what you'd expect. Take care of your family and we'll see you when we can. It's nice nit to worry about stuff like that.

Worst company I've ever worked for was family owned.

The owner had the receptionist write down when everyone got there, was at lunch, and left. Spent 2+ weeks in Russia and landed at like midnight on Thursday. They called Friday morning asking why I wasn't in the office. I was in the emergency room and checked into icu for pneumonia and were texting and calling me to submit my pto and forward my calls.

My boss was the owners daughter and a pita. She said I should eat, sleep, and breathe that company. I should give them so much effort I don't have the energy to run or workout when I get home in the evenings. True story. I started applying for jobs that night.

I could never work for a big company. It's great not having to deal with HR, vacation/sick day policies etc.

Mine closed the office Monday. They never lost power and told us to bring our families in if needed. Then yesterday they told people still without power if they needed a hotel or airbnb to get one and they cover it for two nights. $500 a night reimbursement.

Pretty major tech company

Damn that sounds awful. These guys are great. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I wish I was that stranger in cube 46 but 99% of the time it's awesome

Yeah, not doubting your company.

Just stating that family owned doesn't necessarily mean employee friendly just like corporate doesn't necessarily mean terrible. It simply has to do with leadership at either one.

I'm at a larger corporate company now and wouldn't go back to that family owned if they tripled my pay.

Not that I'm shocked, but it is ironic that the leadership of some companies doesn't bat an eye at doing this when some of them enjoyed the benefit of walking out the office and being unreachable except for their home phone line. Or worked the majority of their career where working from home didn't exist. Or when it did, their kids were in middle school or older. Double edged sword of the internet/smart phones I guess.

And my employer handled this well. Just feel for those having to deal with this bs.

I work for a big company. They've told us to take care of ourselves, families, and homes. They've offered $5000 cash assistance for people who are displaced, and $10,000 no interest loans. I haven't been to work more than a few hours this week. So, yeah, there are drawbacks, but there are asshats at every size of company. Just like there are greedy people with every level of wealth.

I work from home. I was unable to work for 3 days and taking those as PTO would not be so terrible. I was afraid it would be 5 days or more. So far they only expressed concern and to be safe and we'll figure it out when this is over.

I quit my last job mainly because of my previous boss. He was kind of a tyrant. I wonder if he would have been understanding about this. I was never quite sure what to expect from him. He got fired about 1 year after I left. Immature of me I suppose, but I was pretty amused. We had an "unlimited" vacation policy which just meant that it was up to your manager. If he was a jerk, like mine, you got a hard time. I'm happy to have a designated number of days now and I'm so happy to have a nice boss and boss's boss that I would honestly be fine taking 3 days of PTO for this. I don't think they will say that, but I'm just so dam* happy to be working for nice people now. I am relieved not to feel like a piece of cr@p anymore.

I would honestly rather have unpaid days than use PTO, but at a large company that is probably not an option. My mom was in ICU for 2 weeks during the aftermath of Harvey. I worked for a company of about a dozen at that time. Some people physically could not get to work at all. The first week was the week of Labor Day, I think, so they just forgave those 4 days for everyone. There was no work from home option and even if there was I'd probably not have used it then. The following week I got 4 days of bereavement (they gave me 1 extra). I think I missed 3 more days and I asked if they would just dock my pay instead, and they agreed. I never missed so many consecutive day of work and hope I never do it again.
