Just confirming my notion that too many people are idiots or don't pay attention...either blowing right through inoperative lights at intersections or not knowing how to even properly do a 4 way stop.

What really sucks is the ****ty drivers who blow through intersections without a care in the world make the timid drivers hesitate at four way stops and screw up the rhythm of the entire intersection.
It's not a balancing act. State transportation code says the intersection becomes a stop sign if the signal isn't working. It doesn't matter if there is no reason to stop. The reason is it's now a stop sign.TXTransplant said:CheeseSndwch said:

It's definitely a balancing act. You don't want to stop traffic when there is no reason to, but you can't blow though it either because that freaks people out.
BINGO. LOL @ balancing act. It quite literally is not.TxAg82 said:It's not a balancing act. State transportation code says the intersection becomes a stop sign if the signal isn't working. Are you taking about an intersection with no stop signs, yield signs, inoperable lights...nothing? On either street? RonBurgundyIDontBelieveYou.gif The only place i ever see those is waaaay out in the sticks

Its a full stop when its a flashing red light. There isn't any discretion about this.
Because people sometimes roll through it, thats what gives other drivers caution when trying to navigate multiple cars at the intersection...they don't know if other drivers know they 100% have to stop at a flashing red light.
Also treated as stop sign. Same as flashing red. And even more important to stop.TXTransplant said:Tex117 said:

So, none of the lights we went through last night were flashing red. They were all completely dead.
Yup. Its a pain in the azz. One can see the logic in treating each one like a stop sign though. People are bad enough drivers as is...let alone introducing something like discretion.Quote:Quote:

I'm not way out in the sticks, but I am talking about intersections where during normal operation the light(s) are only triggered if there is a car sitting at the light to trigger it. Otherwise, through traffic always has the green light. Lights are set up this way typically because the intersection isn't busy with a lot of cross traffic.
Think a main road with say a school or a small shopping on one side. So, the light for cross traffic doesn't change until a car is sitting there to turn. Until that happens the main traffic flow stays green.
We were actually out towards Magnolia yesterday, and there were a lot of intersections "under construction" - meaning the pole for the light is up but there are no lights on it (and crossroad doesn't actually go anywhere yet - it's just a dead end) and people were slamming on breaks to stop at those. They'd be traveling 40 mph, see the post for the light at the last second (not realizing it doesn't even have any lights on it yet) and slam on the breaks to come to complete stop. At a light that wouldn't even be working if the power was on!
We didn't see a single light last night that was flashing red. They were all completely out.

I can't believe someone with a college education is rationalizing blowing through inoperable intersections without stopping.

Sure sounds like you're advocating running red lights
You are a great poster TxTransplant, but there just isn't any debate to be had about stopping at every light that is out.TXTransplant said:
At busy intersections or ones where you can't clearly see all four sides, absolutely.
I agree with the previous poster who said stay off the roads with no power. Last night was the first time I'd been out. And the number of people who would speed up to an intersection where you could clearly see there were no other cars waiting to cross only to slam on breaks at the last second was a little unnerving. They clearly weren't paying attention at all - not to the fact that the light was out nor that there was not another car to slam on breaks to avoid.
This kind of qualifying phrase always gets me. As if that makes it any less illegal.Quote:
