This is a shame for those of us on the southwest side. This place is OG BBQ, but it had been through some ownership turnover.

Posted also on the gingerman thread but there's a Houston artist who does all sorts of cool iconic Houston and Texas spots.

Was a nice place to stop to/from Mission Bend to College Station back in the day.

May have saved me and my brothers life one day after Bonfire.

So long.

Always stopped on way to College Station. Deer processing was good too.

I thought the new owner greatly improved the brisket and ribs. Sorry to see it close.

Man, I eat there once a week for lunch for the past 3-4 months. I'll say the new owners brisket is some of the best I've had in Houston. Just not enough foot traffic to keep the place in business I guess.

Haven't been in years, but used to stop on occasion on drives from Lake Jackson to Aggieland when I was at A&M.

That didn't take long. Tell us, oh connoisseur, about the best BBQ.

Article could've been a lot shorter: "Dozier's is Closing: Thanks a Lot Biden"

Take it to the San Antonio board.

With as much as the area around the restaurant has grown, they SHOULD have been getting more and more customers coming in. I'm guessing with the property values having jumped up, their rent had greatly increased beyond the rate at which they were getting new customers.

I'm no connoisseur, I just didn't think it was great BBQ.

Their pitmaster left about 6 months ago. Writing has been on the wall. Sad to see such an iconic location close. I thought most of their food is/was very good

Was a never a fan of their deer processing which is a shame since it was 5 min away growing up. They need to just change the name from Fulshear to South Katy and get it over with. Town is too different.

I'm right down the street from Dozier's. It has always sucked. Drove by a couple hours ago tho and it was packed.

Some background from a previous owner.

Quote:

I want to make a statement about Dozier's and how it came to this final week. Six years ago Scott & Smedley put Dozier's on the market to sell the property and the business. I put together a partnership to purchase both and while doing so the land was sold out from under us to a local downtown land owner. So we waited until that deal closed and we proceeded to work out a lease with the new landowner which contained a development clause due to the uncertainty of the local development timeline. The idea was that we were going to relocate the store to a location based on future development trends.

The remodel of the store had to do with the Ft. Bend County building code rules to bring everything up to code because of a change in ownership. My partners spent a lot of money to do this. The building was built in 1968 and was way behind on code. My goal was to bring the food back to where Ed Dozier had it. Scott & Smed made some changes that changed the original Dozier's process.

While doing so, my partners which had no experience in the food business insisted that I bring in a choice of sauces and change all of the sides along with other changes that I resisted. At this time Dozier's never had a certified kitchen. We were not able to legally "Cook" anything but meat. And there were many more changes that drifted the "New" Dozier's away from Ed's Dozier's.

Enough is Enough and I departed Dozier's with little fanfare and hoped for the best. In the meantime the partnership hired a Katy local with a good background in BBQ. His version was so much different that it completely changed Dozier's forever. Sometimes his food was good and there were other times it was not. He was very adamant about the way he sliced his meat in chunks even if the customer asked for thin slices. They lost the Dozier's faithful and gained a few others.

At this point Dozier's lost the BBQ community and the BBQ journalist never really paid much attention. This week is a sad week for the Fulshear Community where change is inevitable and the past will never be fully restored. I have had numerous phone calls and text messages that I need to get involved and do my thing. However, this is also my last week in the restaurant business as I am retiring while I am still healthy.

Keep the Dozier family in your prayers as I know this is a hard week for them too! BTW, I am no longer involved with Dozier's and am closing another business to retire.

Dozier's fate was sealed by that action right there. It just takes one "down" period and you are behind on rent. Hell, sales could be the same quantity as before and they'll still be behind on rent.

Yeah that would have been a deal breaker on the entire deal to me.

My dad and I saw Bum Phillips there eating a bbq sandwich in the early 80's.
We were just there to pick up deer meat my dad was having processed, but we went ahead and got a sandwich too.

I took that route, too, coming from Alief.

Got stopped by the cops once coming home. Cop asked me what I was doing on 359. I told him I took that route because it was "faster."

My girlfriend at the time just shook her head as I got a ticket. But she married me anyway.

Swinging Door - Gone
Doziers - Gone

Brett's, which was the best in Fort Bend County, moved to Katy Mills and prices went up, and quality went down.

Harlem Road, great one day and bad the next.

Witt Pit in Rosenberg now the best around, but not very convenient.

9er's BBQ very middle of the road, but I can walk to it .

Oh well

Wit Pit's great. It's a little bit of a drive, but now that I think about it, probably not any more of a time investment for me than going to any trendy place ITL. I might just head out there tomorrow. Been craving bbq since I made an emergency stop at Rudy's on 59 the other night.

I hesitate to ask about an older establishment on this board, but I've never been to Schulze's. From the photos, it looks like they may have done some updating on the inside, at least it doesn't look like a place from the 60s.

Schulze's is good BBQ. But, if I'm going to the 'burg. I'm going to Witt.

FWIW, I grew up in Rosenberg. I'm pretty sure I've eaten at just about every place that is and was ever there.

How about Monterrey House? Across from the old HL&P building on Ave H. That was the early 70s though.

Brett's in Katy was probably the worst bbq I've had in the "destination" joints on the west side. Sad fall from their original location.

Cut brisket in chunks??

That ain't right. I mean, it's not a matter of opinion - objectively, it shouldn't be done.

Eta: burnt ends are a very specific cut that clearly works well. But choosing to cut the other parts of the brisket in chunks is wrong.

Schulze's Turkey is great. I'll go out of my way to swing through there and pick up a turkey sandwich on my way down to Bay City/Matagorda.

It was one of 2 or 3 different ways I'd go, and I generally stopped there on the way back from dove hunting opening weekend at my buddy's place in Washington On The Brazos.

Wasn't the best BBQ, but it was good and always a good stopping point.
