Here's another one, not in Rice Village area but is Gallant knight still around?

Gallant Knight is long gone; you'll have to pee in your own shower if you want to relive the thrill.

Big Easy on Kirby is about the last place I know still kicking from the late 90s - early 2000s era. Probably still gets some of the musicians who used to play Gallant Knight.

Gallant Knight relocated at least once but it wasn't near the same.

such a great place. Charged cover to the white patrons but not to the black patrons. Didn't matter - great music and vibe. Sammy Relford could bring it!

Agree. Hard to imagine a place like that existing nowadays. I always enjoyed going with my Evander Holyfield look alike friend (was a security guard at our law school) and Sammy would stop the music when we walked in and acknowledge him as Holyfield. Always worked out really well for me.

They tried to reopen in the old Timberwolf Pub building. Had a big "reunion" with Klockwork playing, but the magic was gone. I think that location lasted a few days. Last I heard - several years ago - was from another Village business owner who wanted to buy the name and the sign, but the old guy who owned it thought he was sitting on a goldmine or something and wouldn't sell for a reasonable price.

Brings back memories. I've only been to Ginger Man a handful of times but I definitely remember the cask Elissa. I never really liked Elissa from a bottle but the cask was so much better.

Never heard of this place. Spent weeks at a time near or in Rice Village. It doesn't even show up in Google Maps. I'll just drive a few blocks and go to Southern Yankee anyway.

All I knew about was 2 Rows and Saint Arnold's when it came to the early 2000's craft brewing scene.

Valhalla's.
lived close to that joint in law school. $10 was always more than enough to get you hammered. It was great when they were unloading a tapped keg and beers were $.25-.50.

Two Rows was more crap brewing than craft brewing.

The last time I went there (with a Kincaid grad who wasn't too far out of college) it was hilariously post-frat house for private school kids. But it also felt like th **** houses I lived in in college so I felt at home.

Damn, that sucks. Is Volcano's still around?
Amazingly yes.

And its still great.
The Gingerman & Under the Volcano were clients of mine back in the '90's. Owned by the same guy at the time. He generated some serious coin from those two bars.

Username checks out.

Also, it would have been easier to call Under The Volcano "Lava".

He had a Midas touch. Generated enough cash from his two Houston bars to open a Gingerman in Dallas & New York City with no debt. I think there was one in Austin for awhile as well.

The original one in Dallas was either in the West End or Deep Ellum (I can't remember). It's now located at Las Colinas in Irving.

Looks like the one in New York was a casualty of the pandemic. It shut down in 2021.

Cute Nickleback-style cut down, but I liked it next door to Bombay Brassserie.

My friends and I were talking about 2 Rows the other night. We all agreed the beer was crap, but we still went because its freaking $1 beer night!
