Buying a new (to me) house in the Heights and want to get someone to look at the property to tell me what my options are for a whole house generator. The house is a 1910 Bungalow that's been expanded in a historic district so I'd like to talk to someone who is familiar with all that requires. Thanks!

Go cheap man version unless you prefer the automatic transfer. I spent probably 2k all in and takes me less than 5 min to have house up and running.

I know nothing of the OP, but most people aren't that handy.

Also, in the future, when a person goes to sell with a homemade install, an ******* buyer can really bend a seller over for not getting the proper permits and inspections to adhere to codes.

Why do I say that? I have a friend who IS that *******, and anytime it comes up in random conversation, I brow beat him until he shuts up.

I'm handy and have had a "cheap mans" version with a portable 8.2 KW portable gas generator for years. My current house has a back feed that I had installed that worked ok during Harvey/Ice storm but I could only run part of the house by shedding load via the circuit panel. I can do that but it's a pain when you are burning 12 gallons of gas a day for 14 days (looking at you Hurricane Ike) and I'm not a young as I once was as the saying goes. I want the auto nature of a NG gen with an auto transfer switch and am looking for someone who can advise on placement and cost for a constrained homesite.

Just because you don't have an automatic transfer switch and stationary Gen set doest't mean you're not getting permitted work. I have a portable generator and 50amp plug with panel interlock.

How big is your lot?

Your biggest issue will be existing gas meter and breaker panel.

We're in the Heights and put ours in the back by the detached garage. I had CenterPoint install a second meter since the gas line runs in the alley.

I used these guys and liked them. I had it all figured out thanks to Generator Supercenter who came out first but they were 6 months out and about $500 more expensive.

Given the number of whole home NG generators that have been installed since Uri, I'll be surprised if the gas supply doesn't struggle next time.

I had several companies come out and give quotes and went with generator Supercenter. Happy with product/service. In heights too.

We used Grasten Generators from this board's recs. Price/service was great.

+1 for Collaborative Services. Install was in August 2022 four weeks after I signed the contract. Has kicked on twice for short power outages.
